Hayes Carll. Not a bag song on his CDs. Some of his older ones are harder to get but I highly recommend tracking down Flowers and Liquor and Little Rock.

The first time I was introduced to Lizz Wright was on the Sunday Morning show's music review. I was mesmerized. Her voice is raw emotion, sultry, and rich in tones. The Orchard is excellent, especially song #4 (Hey Mann) and #12 (Strange).

If you don't know Emmylou Harris at all, buy anything she's ever done. The worst that you'll get is really good. This album is lovely, if low-key and sad. There is a strain of American music - the only authentic strain aside from Afro-American - embodied in country, folk and some rock based on the former two that is heart-piercing, but absolutely lovely. And Emmylou Harris - who defies labels - does it best of all (though her version of "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" - elsewhere - rocks with a kind of tough cynicism that the Broadway showtune never had.) I've seen her up close in a small concert and she is the very epitome of grace, modesty and beauty. I've been playing this disk for months in my waiting room, and client after client has been struck and asked me about it and her (and Juanes too, but ... Read More

Accelerate can be one of those albums which fans, upset with R.E.M.'s last few releases, may judge too highly, throwing out words like comeback just to describe a vague adult-rock, easy going consistency in a way which almost insults some of their finer intricacies.

Listening to this new CD takes me back to the "rocker" days of my youth. I loved it and often put it in a 6 CD rotation with Delbert, Willie and Ray Charles!!!

I bought this album, thinking that i do like raconteurs, but i thought that their first album had a few dud songs on it. This one really hits the spot after (for me) a year of searching for an album i can just put on and listen to the whole thing with out being tempted to fast forward through a song or two or three. I really like the first and last songs, and songs 7 & 8. These are four songs that could anchor an album on their own. Overall, my best purchase (of music) of the year.

Now, I LOVE Randy Newman, but it has happened before, some of his older albums were simply generic blues... sounds all the same, and none of it very interesting.

But, going back twenty years or so, with the "Born Again" Album, "Trouble in Paradise", "Little Criminals", and especially "Land of Dreams" we were given really very good MUSIC. I play piano myself, and at least one or two songs per Album were fun to play. Not like all his earlier stuff, just stupid drug soaked sorry for yourself minority Blues. Besides, Newman is no Black. The man could be a Banker if he wanted. Playing that thick lipped Blues style, pretending to be so dizzy ... I should hope he is just trying to kid somebody.

And here, in "Harps & Angels" Newman has returned to his earliest primitive style, as though he had forgotten ... Read More

I will never buy another Coldplay album without hearing it first. This is the best example of a "DBB" (download it before buying it) album. I can understand how a band should evolve and not repeat themselves. From The Beatles to Depeche Mode we have seen bands changing their style album after album but STILL each album is great. Tough I didn't expect another A Rush of Blood album I sure expected great melodies or complex arrangements. None of this is found here. Sure, "VIVA LA VIDA" is one of the greatest songs of this years and one of Coldplay's best, but do we have to go all through an album of dull "songs" just to have one or at the most 2 great songs?? I can't believe this is the same Brian Eno that produced such gems with Bowie and Talking Heads. I guess a producer can't do much when the artist lacks completes inspiration. What ... Read More

I'm not an Elvis fan who loves everything he does. Once again, however, he's collaborated with the right people and come up with something that's as excellent as anything he's ever produced. The songs and the performances are great. If you still have a turntable, or if you've just bought one (it happens), I highly recommend the vinyl version. You'll enjoy the high-quality fidelity and the ineffable feel of capturing this music in the right medium. If you're completely unfamiliar with Elvis Costello's music, I would recommend this record anyway. It's modern and classic at the same time; it's just a great record.
