I have almost all of David Russel's CDs, and many other CDs of Latin American guitar music. This is my favorite in both categories for about 2 years, now! His rendition of Cardoso's Vals Peruano is amazing. It'll make you sit up and say, "What???? How did he do THAT???". In his hands, Reis' nice little "waltz-y" Se Ela Perguntar becomes a plaintive elegy that'll rip your heart right out of your chest. I played it in this style at my father's funeral and there wasn't a dry eye in the place. This is an amazing CD from, (I think), the best classical guitarist touring today.

I don't know how Russell makes his guitar like this, how his transcriptions get the tone and expression that this instrument is supposed to bring with the richness and playfullness of the keyboard. How all that the voices sound clear and distinct. I'm giving this record to a Scarlatti loving friend, it's so beautifully played and really getting the famous Spanish feeling. And some intrincate passage in the Loillet piece made me stop my car today, this guy is getting me crashed some day.

David Russell has been part of my guitar listening experience for sometime now. He truly is a phenomenal guitarist. On this album he plays many of what I call "Renaissance Hits" on, of course, the "acoustic" guitar. I had to listen very close to determine that he really was playing these Renaissance works on the guitar and not on the lute itself. He does a fantastic job of replicating the sound of the lute and what I consider the "Renaissance Style ", The album contains a good sample of Renaissance music with y works by John Dowland, Pietro Borrono, William Byrd and of course by that ubiquitous "Anonymous." If you don't know Emmylou Harris at all, buy anything she's ever done. The worst that you'll get is really good. This album is lovely, if low-key and sad. There is a strain of American music - the only authentic strain aside from Afro-American - embodied in country, folk and some rock based on the former two that is heart-piercing, but absolutely lovely. And Emmylou Harris - who defies labels - does it best of all (though her version of "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" - elsewhere - rocks with a kind of tough cynicism that the Broadway showtune never had.) I've seen her up close in a small concert and she is the very epitome of grace, modesty and beauty. (This should be one of the first composers you've ever heard of if you've ever played the classical guitar). This recording is beyond remarkable. The tone and virtuosity is the best you will ever hear along with Russell's other recordings, as well. And David Russell's guitar sound is terrific, intonation is perfect and it projects extremely well. He is very sensitive with this music. Giuliani was a definite genius in his own right although most of his compositions are not as famous as some other guitar composers. His style was somewhat like Sor, pretty straight forward and his progressions never really straight out of key just like most 19th century composers. Giuliani was a virtuoso guitarist and these are virtuoso compositions. Nothing on this recording is harsh and Russell pays attention to the smallest details. ... Read More

The choice of pieces is exceptional but the sound quality of the recording is pretty awful. It sounds like the microphone was covered with a thick blanket. The guitar Russell plays is a Dammann but the quality of recording is so poor it might as well be a cigar box. Shame, and you know what, it's just as bad on the other CD I have of his: "Baroque Guitar." I like your playing and taste but David, please get a better engineer.

This recording contains the only in-print versions of Danza Paraguaya Nos. 2 & 3. Berta Rojas covered the 2nd dance on the now out-of-print Intimate Barrios and Kristinn Árnason covered the 3rd dance on a now out-of-print A.C. Classics recording. Even the 3-volume Naxos set which is supposed to be comprehensive coverage of known Barrios works, doesn't have these 2 pieces.
