I have never tried composting before, so I wanted the big picture. I researched online and this seems to be the undisputed classic book on the subject. It seems to tell ALL you need to know to manage your composting, and in as few words as possible.

It's bigger than I thought it would be - but that's a good thing! Fits under the kitchen sink quite well - and the snapping lid makes sure (along with the filter) that smells don't escape (and "critters" don't enter)! The size is a bonus in that we don't have to empty daily, unless we want to! Great bargain!

Good construction and excellent odor control (though I agree you should empty it into your compost bin at least once a week, to avoid bad odors when you take off the lid). I took the tip of another user and put used plastic vegetable bags from the grocery store to line the container--which makes it very easy to keep clean.

I was a bit skeptical - not sure how well the filters would keep the smell of kitchen compost out of the kitchen - but was really surprised! These things work!!! We've even not emptied the bin for a week on purpose just to test them! I'm sold. When I need more, I will be sure and order more! A definite "must buy".

As a trial run, we bought a stainless steel composter and 2 filters and started to compost our kitchen scraps early Spring 2008. We changed the filter once in the summer. During the initial 6 months, there was 1. no offensive smell to humans 2. no attractive smell to bugs In September we ordered more filters. We are happy with our composter and will continue to recycle our scraps.
