For any aspiring screenwriter, this book is a must. It is not one of those annoying books about why this movie is better than that (a subjective analysis, in my opinion), this book is more about the nuts and bolts of good spec screenplay writing. For the first time, I learned to differentiate a spec script from a shooting script (thought I knew, but I was wrong), and I think it's important for any screenwriter to know every aspect of the screenplay form so that they can make informed choices.

For years, I thought I could learn enough by reading screenplays, watching movies and reading books like "Story," by Robert McKee. Those are all good steps towards understanding the craft, but at some point, any writer who considers him/herself a professional needs to know why they are ... Read More

I found the book extremely helpful - but I would NOT recommend for beginning screenwriters.

I've written almost 3 screenplays, and had them critiqued in class. So, I would say that I am an beginner-intermediate level. This book is an excellent resource for those who are already familiar with good screenwriting rules and formats, and need to refine these points.

I saw many of my own mistakes in the book examples (yikes!) - you know what they say, the best way to learn is by making a mistake.

Therefore, if you have yet to write at least one screenplays, I'm not sure this book will be as helpful as books like "Hot Property" or "The Screenwriter's Bible."

You do have to take this with a grain of salt.

I have just finished reading the provocative 1 star review by NO WAY. Yes, he is right, Save the Cat IS formulaic. But this can be helpful, as the formula is based on sound principles.

I have used it as a guide to write my first screenplay and found it immensely helpful. (I have just begun marketing it - so wish me luck.) I have previously written a long Mythopoeic novel, have studied mythology and folklore (including Campbell) and so I recognized a lot of the underlying principles. Perhaps this helped me have a little perspective on it.

As I see it - the formula is the the guide to the structure. You still need to have talent in writing. You may even be able to stray from the formula, but knowing it is ... Read More

Can't compare it to other books as I have not read many. I liked 'Save The Cat! a lot - but that is more of an outline to work from. This is the underlying theory.

Should be helpful to writers in any genre.

I bought this book from Amazon in July. I have made 2 feature length films before, but these were mostly improvised (Horror! - Gold Edition and Capitalism - The Movie, both available on DVD at Amazon). I fancied actually writing a movie before filming started!

As the book recommends, please actually write as you read.

Step by step, this book leads you, suprises you. By the end of 21 days you will be exhausted. And you will have a full length screenplay.

This is really the start, not the end. You will send your scripts to friends, who will suggest improvements. But the hard work has been done.

Very recommended. The writing style is fun and inspiring.

(My own 21 day screenplay is "Future Moocher", currently in rewrites)

This book was very helpful. As someone who currently has no "mentor" so to speak in the film industry, this book has acted as my temporary guide. It addresses many problems screenwriters go through, as well as warning people of the pitfalls that many aspiring screenwriters fall into. Highly recommended.

Over the years I feared that I'd become a professional reader of "How to write a screenplay" books. This book when read and studied in conjunction with Mr. Snyder's first Save the Cat book cured me. These two truly are the only books you'll need to learn the ropes AND maintain screenwriting skills.

While Save the Cat is a no punches pulled, tight read on structure, story and plot, etc., "Goes to the Movies" takes these arts a giant step further. GTM breaks down genres and tells the writer what to look for, how to plot, and how to structure each type of SP. And Mr. Snyder uses popular movie examples to illustrate his points. Another plus because I'm sick of reading a How-tos that serve as advertisements for the author's unproduced SPs.

Unlike the vast majority of other How ... Read More
