I'm a programmer and industrial guy who enjoys writing fiction shorts in my spare time and thought it might be fun to start cobbling simple 'illustrations' together to help set the mood for the stories. Really 2D stuff but I figured a 3D tool like Poser 3D would help create a series of modified images for different chapters. I'm of average competence in tools like Corel and PaintShopPro, which I use to illustrate tech articles and web pages. Poser's interface and paradigm is pretty tough to grasp - in part because I already know "other things" I guess and thus have incorrect expectations of how to do it.

I bought this book hoping to get myself up to speed; it isn't doing that. I think the author tried to mix in too much advanced material. Each chapter starts with a horrible "intro" ... Read More

My last experience with POSER was ver.4 and I found it hard to understand and was less than satisfed with the results... I recently saw an advertisement for version 7 and was amazed at how much the program had advanced, now incorporating many features used in high-end CGI productions. My problem was, although I had ideas I wanted to realize I still didn't really know how to drive Poser... The supplied reference manual was poorly constructed and too technical for a semi-luddite like me!

I searched Amazon for any "how to" books and saw 'Practical Poser 7" unfortunately the book reviews accompianing it did not give a really good idea of what it was about, so ordering it was a bit of a gamble...
As it was, I hit the jackpot! This is the book I needed to make sense of Poser. The examples ... Read More

Honestly - this book has helped me advance in Poser and Photoshop in a matter of weeks. Admittedly - I thought this book would offer extremely detailed step-by-step tutorials, giving precise instructions to each and every little technique, yet much of it is just suggestion or insight, leaving the user to figure out how to do what is suggested. Not that there are not enough details in this book for the reader to try instantly! At first I was a bit dissapointed as I realized that I would have to do some serious playing around in both programmes to figure it out, but I can honestly say that it has done me the greatest favor, as I have stumbled across countless tools and been able to develop my own techniques in a very short space of time that I simply would not have if I did not have this books insights. I have to agree with the previous reviewer in the amount of material covered but for the price that I paid I would have liked the screens to be in Poser 7 and not in Poser 6. It also seems that the cartoon figures were dropped from Poser 7 but had several minutes within these tutorials. If this was really Poser 7 than why not show Poser 7 items.

I contacted the publisher and they said that they used a beta version to produce this tutorial which means that they were actually writing a tutorial for version 6+. The figures from version 6 were used since they didn't know what figures came with version 7. There were no plans to update this product to include references to the version 7 figures (I guess that we'll have to wait for their Poser Pro tutorial for the Poser 7 figures).

I love this software! I am using the demo version and waiting for my full version order. This is the Professional version and it's easy for any amateur to use, which I am. It comes with tutorials with easy to follow steps. I feel confident that I can do a huge project with this, by myself! I just received the Official Guide and it's a wonderful read. Not boring at all. Kelly L Murdock did an excellent job with manual.

Very simple tutorials which do a great job of walking you step by step through most of the features of VUE. The manual that comes with Vue is rather scattered and all-around unhelpful. Better to ditch that and just start with this book. If you have some experience with 3d tools then you can zip through this book in a day or two. So, overall, a great book that most people would find very helpful.

I have been using Bryce since version 2.1. For edition 6, DAZ rewrote the core code that dated back from MetaCreations time (1998), so there are few novelties. The one feature that is interesting in this release is the IBL (Image Based Lighting) renders. They look excellent provided you choose a good HDRI map.
Render times are long, as they have always been with Bryce and the quality is still very high. Expect excellent antialiasing and silky smooth reflections even at low render settings. Bryce is still superior to Vue in that respect and its scene display is also better (adaptative degradation with far less flickering). With similar quality settings and output, Vue is as slow as Bryce, and dreadfully so when handling reflection/refraction. What Bryce still lacks (and what DAZ should add in edition 7) is object instancing ... Read More

So far the software is great but my computer is the problem because I don't think the video board on my computer is up to stuff for this software. Most of the stuff on there though you have to buy content from Cornicopia...like with Poser 7 you can buy and add content from Content Paradise...which sadly I think both with my Poser 7 software and Vue 6 easel...I am not computer suavy enough to figure it out...but I still love the software.

Manga Studio EX is a great software product. All up and coming artists will find the amount of customization to be thrilling. Even a novice could create professional works with this program.
Let me layout the advantages of this software.
-Time Reduction: It allows an faster more efficient production
-Cost cutting: especially if you use screen tones (which I believe are hard to find without the internet), paints, or specialty pencils. Obviously because it is digital it can not run out so create all you want.
Editing: Once again digital media can be edited freely, unlike traditional pen and paper methods
Customization: Highly customizable tools and it even allows the traditional hand draw art to be scanned.
Ease: Almost right out of the box it is easy to use and to make things better even has preset standard ... Read More

I think this book is great for learning the basics, for understanding how Second Life works, and for gaining a flavour of what awaits you.

But, as is often pointed out, such guides are very quickly out of date. And what it doesn't give you, is a real insight into what really goes on every day in-world.

For this, you need to check out the free guide to Second Life, The AvaStar (www.the-avastar.com). It's an online newspaper covering the news, business, fashion, travel, entertainment and events of the virtual world, and every week publishes a 'Guide to...' feature, focusing on the best places to go in-world.

If you read through the paper once, you'll immediately gain an excellent understanding as to what is going on in the world. (All the back issues are available to download for free at the website).
