This film is a strange one for me as I remember I actually hated it the first time I watched it years back but when I started looking seriously at old films and especially Westerns I began to appreciate "Cat Ballou" a lot more and now after seeing this a few times, I have to say that this is an excellent, hilarious spoof on Westerns and the jokes age very well even to today. As a big fan of all kinds of music myself, I really appreciated the role that Nat King Cole in one of his last performances ever before his death by lung cancer together with Stubby Kaye in the hilarious sung narrative that runs throughout the film. It's amazing what was accomplished on clearly a tiny budget and I thought the cast was very good and especially Lee Marvin was the alcoholic gunfighter.

Years ago my husband and I watched this movie. We loved it. No dialogue but you know what's happening. It told an amazing story. Human, rough, real but quite good. We take fire for granted, this shows us that life isn't all that easy.

Not a sci-fi movie for todays generation which is a shame. Gore, violence and explosions traded in for acting, atmosphere and great story telling. One of my favorite movies. And as for the "editorial review", Gort didn't destroy Washington. Get it right and get this movie.

I have to admit that I liked the epcot-esque city in which this story is based. Its retro sci-fi look is great and lends itself well to the story. The special effects range from "good for the time" to just plain "bad". The story itself drags on a little too long. There is no reason this movie should be 120 minutes. The premise, however, is good and has not been well duplicated since the original. I simply wish sci-fi movies could have avoided "coming of age" during the time of psychedelic filmography. Hard core classic sci-fi fans might be intrigued, but I fear most everyone else will be bored with this film. I can say it's average, and that's about all.

I loved the book (and it's sequel, After Worlds Collide) when I was young. The movie is certainly not as good, but still a lot of fun. Its too bad they never made a movie of the sequel.

: Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

This comedy is about the dangers of our nuclear age. Doctor Strangelove is a spoof about the insanity produced by those who concentrate in seeking power, for power corrupts and absolute power has a tendency to corrupt absolutely.

General Jack D. Ripper, played by Sterling Hayden, is after purity of bodily fluids and wants to rid the world of Communism, therefore he orders a squadron of bombers to penetrate Russian soil and eliminate key places to destroy this enemy of the free world.

The President of the United States, played by Peter Sellers, who by the way, plays several roles during this film, from the war room, gets involved in negotiations for peace, and the give and take is simply... hilarious. Simply love when he says: "you can't fight in the war room, that behavior is unacceptable in the ... Read More

George Pal was the leading producer of sci-fi films of the 1950's and "The War of the Worlds" is probably his finest effort. I watched it as a new film in a local theatre in 1953 when I was 13. The scene in the abandoned farm house is still one of the best examples of building suspense in a film scene that I can recall. You could have heard a pin drop from an audience full of kids! The special effects are still impressive although a bit dated due to the state of the technology of the day. The "Special Collector's Edition" does the film justice with the cleaned-up picture and especially the remixed soundtrack.

Some of the customer reviews I've read criticize this DVD release as not being in the original wide-screen aspect ratio. To clear this up: The original screen aspect ratio determined in 1943 for American ... Read More
