1.Chaplin starring: Robert Downey Jr., Geraldine Chaplin, Paul Rhys, John Thaw, Moira Kelly
directed by: Richard Attenborough

 : Chaplin

In the hands of director Richard Attenborough, Charlie Chaplin's life story becomes a sweeping and touching drama. Robert Downey, Jr. gives an unforgettable performance as Chaplin, who rose from the slums of London to become Hollywood's favorite silent movie character, the Tramp. Along the way, Charlie had to deal with his mother's insanity, his love affairs, marriages, and a paternity scandal, all involving much younger women, and investigation by none other than J. Edgar Hoover.

This very entertaining story vividly recreates the beginnings of the movie industry. The sets and costumes are magnificent, as is the John Barry soundtrack, which features Chaplin's own song, "Smile." Downey gives the performance of a lifetime playing a controversial but ultimately very likeable hero ... Read More

Air America is a movie for lovers of the Police academy movies or fools who spend more time hi five-ing their buddies at sporting events than watching the game. DUDE! Yes you. Mel Gibson and Robert Downey JR, head an embarrassing cast of actors playing lovable rogue types in this attempt at ironic comedy. The comedy is a stream of one liners and smart replies to each other and senior authority figures. The scripting is so poor that canned laughter would not be out of place in this dull movie begging the audience for laughs.
The producers of the movie used local villages as extras who frequently shot at the cast during filming. A Laotian spokesmen explained the villagers position. "It's not that the movie showing the C.I.A making money illegally in Laos that is upsetting. It's the fact that two major American actors ... Read More

There was no way Zodiac needed to be as long as it was. It dragged not long into it, though I really tried to embrace this film. It is a very dry type of film with a lot of different timelines and confusing aspects to keep track of. There is almost too much going on, but at the same time, there really is no actual action. There is some suspence and mystery, but for a film and true life event where there was no acual ending, it didn't really matter. There is alot of facts, but also alot of speculation and fabrication going on with this movie.

The story of the Zodiac killer is actually quite interesting but again, since the case was never really solved, and with the movie not really doing anything except revisiting that span of time, the movie feels a tad wasted.

The acting is really the redeaming ... Read More

 : Iron Man

The worst film I've seen in a long time. Senseless violence, one-dimensional characters and outright racist portrayals of arabs. Robert Downey Jr. shows the emotional range of an earthworm. He wisecracks stone-faced throughout, although doesn't seem to care one way or the other what happens to him or anyone around him. The one opportunity for redemption falls flat, as there's no real change after the press conference. The romantic interest is forced and uncomfortable. You have to sit through two hours of tepid "build-up" before Iron Man actually battles a bad guy. Let's hope this is the last we see from this group.

 : A Scanner Darkly

The plot confused and depressed me. Keanu Reeves is perfect for this role. His poor character has been dazed and confused for so long it's not true. It's one twisted, nightmarish sci-fi tale about the horror of drug addiction. Much more effective than the guy who used to come on TV years ago with an egg and a frying pan.("This is your brain. This is your brain on drugs".) 'Just say no' to Substance D. I would because it causes a lobotomy and knowing that would be enough for me to not take it. Now the "interpolated rotoscoping" technique -- Been there done that. It's just not as cool the second time. WAKING LIFE, also directed by the same guy, was fantastic and fun to watch. This here, not so much. On top of that I saw this animation in TV commercials which pretty much did for this style of animation what TV commercials did for all ... Read More

Comedy is a dicey business. For some, it isn't funny unless it's current and political. To others it's all about how people get along together. Luckily, this movie gives everyone a chance to laugh. While this is a romantic comedy, with all of the usual "boy meets/rejects/gets rejected by/reunites with girl" plots, it is also a timeless look at the business of television, soap operas in particular. The only indication that this movie might not be current is the over-the-top 80s wardrobe.

Also, the cast certainly contributes to the experience. Just watching Robert Downey Jr., Sally Field, Carrie Fisher, Kevin Kline, Elizabeth Shue, Terry Hatcher, Whoopie Goldberg, Garry Marshall and Cathy Moriarty tear up the scenery is a complete treat.

You won't regret owning this one.
