I think I'd rather sit through a root canal than watch this horrific film again. James Toback has to be the worst writer/director at work today. Even talented Robert Downey Jr. is wasted. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

 : The Singing Detective

What can I say? I was a Singing Detective virgin, being ignorant of the British TV show or the story line. I bought it for Robert Downey, Jr. It is weird, disturbing and pulls you in like a moth to a flame. I have watched it several times now, getting a little more understanding every time I do. My favorite scene is the Mr. Sandman number. How funny!

The acting is supurb; why this didn't get any critical acclaim is beyond me. Robert Downey Jr proves, yet again, that professionally no one can touch him. He is a rare class of actor that can deliver any range be it humor or tragedy. This role had to be a challenge though with the total body make up needed for Dan Dark's horrible skin condition; not to mention the emotional roller coaster the character is on. The man appears to cry real tears ... Read More

: Fur: An Imaginary Portrait Of Diane Arbus

This is one of my favorite love stories. It is well acted by both Kidman and Robert Downey Jr. and the details that went into the design and feel of the movie transported you into her world. If you know Diane Arbus's work than of course you will know that the movie will be slightly twisted toward the unusual and feed off of your intrigue for the uncommon. Arbus's pictures always made me feel like you shouldn't be so intrigued by them but for some reason you could just stare at them all day and that is how the movie pulled me as well. The plot is also rounded out nicely by the story of Arbus finding her true self and breaking away from the life she chose when she was trying to pretend to fit in with what was considered normal. If you like a little magic, the un-norm, and passionate and therefore dramatic love stories than ... Read More

I'll admit to having shed a few tears when watching the extremely tender and movie film, but I'm not ashamed for this film is one that should reach any fathers heart. I am new to the Chaplin fan club (as I made obvious within my review of `City Lights') and this film has got to be, not only my favorite Chaplin film, but one of my favorite films of all time. Honestly, it is one of the purest expressions of human love and devotion I've seen in a long time, and what makes the film so moving is that it never reaches the saccharine levels of sentiment that so many films feel the need to broach today. Instead, `The Kid' allows your heartstrings to swell from the realness of each and every scene, capturing the love between this man and boy with a natural and realistic (never forced) air.

`The Kid' tells the story of ... Read More

This was painful, and surprisingly so because it seems to have all the elements of being wonderful: an interesting plot, complex characters, clever director, and very talented actors. As soon as it was over, however, I was angry at having been duped into watching it. It (the film) is so aware of those surefire elements I named a moment ago, that it seemed fine with the fact that the scenes weren't going right, it wasn't believable, and it was hard for the audience to like or care about any of the characters. All in all, a waste of time and painfully so. I gave it two stars only because it was better than I would have done, were I a director.

It looks fantastic. Hopkins and Thompson give marvelously controlled and thoughtful performances.

But...after the film is over, I was left thinking..."Huh? Is that all there is?"

So there is a butler (or head of staff, or whatever his title was) who is so devoted to his job and whatever employer (who must be high-minded and a gentleman to earn such devotion), that he is never able to develope normal human interaction with women, his father, and strangers that he meets. Why is that worth two hours of dialogue?

And someone tell me why we are to believe that Mr. Lewis buys the estate, and uses his wealth to restore it? I kept waiting for some interesting revelation, but it never came. Surely his one visit thirty years earlier wasn't the only reason? I understand that wasn't even in the book. ... Read More
