 : They Live

This delightfully eerie movie demonstrates that great films are not necessarily pretentious; world-class art can appeal to regular folks; you needn't read John Taylor Gatto to lean the truth about 'Education;" and although you could study "alternative economic history" for months on end at the Yamaguchy website, Mary E. Hobart and David Astle aren't the only reality gurus who can clue you in to what's really going down here on the third stone from the sun. Not at all! John Carpenter manages to do just that in his 95 minute "B-Movie" masterpiece, 'They Live!"

So read the other reviews, form your own opinions, but by all means be sure to see "They Live." And if you are an "art snob" or one of those people who seek cultural justification for pursuing the enjoyable, then consider that ... Read More

I was seven years old and forbidden to watch this movie. My parents went out and I watched it with the babysitter. Couldnt sleep for weeks and it remains one of only two movies ever to truly scare me. The other was a vincent price horror that I also wasnt supposed to watch. Its was so weird seeing it again 25 years later and I can see why a seven year old would be terrified.

Phantasm is a late '70s supernatural fantasy horror movie that does a great job of combining atmosphere, creepy nightmares, flying sphere-violence, location, characters, events and scares into one great, big bundle of nightmarish joy.
As an artist with a love of all things odd, unusual, beautiful, surreal, spooky and fun, this movie delivers all that and a bag of evil chips from another dimension.
Let me describe the highlights and joys of this movie:
The creepy, old cemetery setting.
The mystical, surreal hallways under the morgue.
The flying spheres with daggers at the end that contributed a great gore scene.
The almost stereotypical '70s fellas, with their collar-length hair, leather jackets and love of rock.
The evil midgets that chase you and spew yellow vomit.

Big Trouble in Little China is a cult classic. Like most cult classics (Raising Arizona, Robocop, Matrix, Dumb and Dumber, etc.) you're either going to "get" this movie or you won't. The FX in this movie can be cheesy - they didn't have a huge budget. But what works fantastically with the script is the off the wall fusion of red neck machismo and Kung Fu mysticism. Kurt Russell gives a memorable performance as the fearless and not so bright hero of the story, all the while doing this lame John Wayne imitation that somehow manages to work for him. Leading his band of misfits, they take on the dark forces forces of ancient China. Will you enjoy it? Who knows. But if you like Kung-Fu and slapstick humor, you've got to give this a chance. It's looking a little dated these days, but most of it still works just ... Read More

This is a great vampire movie with a good balance of suspense and blood. Some stories in the genre are too heavy on the character's personal stories and light on the gore, or vice versa, but not this well written horror. James Woods is a 'suave' and savvy vampire killer who lets his guard down with the most ruthless head vampire he's ever encountered. He finds out too late he's been double crossed...the blood suckers knew he was coming...but who is the traitor amongst the day walkers and why? Worthy of a space on my 'favorite horror' flicks shelf.

You'd think an interesting plot and John Carpenter
would result in a great film experience.
Think again.
The acting was bad and there was no atmosphere,
tension or scares.
There were a couple of moments when I thought
the film was primarily created as propaganda
for birth/population control
and as a not-too-subtle attack on Christianity.
I still like the plot and hope another film-maker
takes a shot at it.

This is my favorite Wes Craven film, a very scary and intelligent film based on a factual account. Many of Craven's films (especially his early ones) have had either bad acting, poor production values, but have all had a creepy, scary quality to them that is impossible to shake. This film has very good acting, incredible atmosphere (it's shot on location in Haiti), and incredible tension. Craven doesn't go for cheap laughs here. He takes his subject very seriously, and doesn't make light of it. There's no self consciousness or the self referentialness of his latter Scream movies. Craven has said that strange phenomena happened during the shooting of this film to those in the crew who mocked the idea of the native religion, but Craven respected it deeply and nothing unique happened to him. I've always had mixed feelings about Craven, ... Read More

'The Shining',where would we be without Stanley Kubrick's distorted version of Stephen King's classic novel?the horror industry would be at a standstill. This is my absolute favorite of horror-films,it's a very dark film indeed.Believe it or not, this film is not much like the novel the one made for TV in early 2000 had more elements from the book not mentioned in the 1980 version-which actually works for me:)kubrick unlocked the darkest doors to his imagination when he made this film.Everything from the creepy little twins,to the Timberline Lodge Hotel(shown as the Overlook Hotel in the movie).Down to the old song you hear in the ballroom which was written in the 20's or 30's by Ray Noble and his Mayfair Dance Orchestra and the eerie film score by Wendy Carlos. There's not too many people who haven't seen this film and i've never met someone who didn't ... Videodrome was a fantastic film by Cronenberg, I remember watching this film for the very first time just a few years ago and I was really impressed by this. I just thought that the film was more relevant and contemporary nowadays then it was back then. This innovative mix of science fiction, sex, violence, surrealism and horror has lost none of its touch over the years. I have enjoyed most of Cronenberg's movies and think he is one of the most underrated directors out there, this film definitely represents his own vision and was quite original I mean nobody would have thought about this concept back in 1983 which is amazing. O.K. so the film was totally bizarre and if you're the type of person who likes watching films that are streamlined and normal then forget it but if your familiar with Cronenberg's work then you'll probably know what to expect, the film ...
