One of my favorite operas. The sets were rather spartan, but the music is excellent. My major gripe is with the subtitles in the DVD (and the reason for my 4 star review) - they are very poor. I understand little Russian, and the subtitles appear once every few minutes. At least if they enclosed the libretto with the DVD I would have been able to follow the singing while listening/watching.

This is one of those occasions when everything comes together, (which to me is a hallmark of this opera company.) Perfect tiptop cast, fabulous costumes and scenery and a master at the podium (no need of anything but his hands.) I love this company and recommend this production as a perfect example of Russian opera at its best.

Having seen this opera many years ago i was rather hazy on the story line but on viewing i found it most enjoyable, especially seeing two great singers once more Lucia popp and Siegried Jerusalem they bought vitality to the production
This opera is one that you would have to view several times to get all the subilties, it is fun to watch once you have the knack of the story line
Perhaps the most difficult understanding ,is one has the main sections of the opera as a concert piece and you are inclined to forget that the rest of the opera has some charming bits of music in it
The chorus work is superb and rousing over all i thoroughly enjoyed the performance and would without hesitation recomend it and forget the movie version that is doing the rounds this stage production ... Read More

This, one of the greatest operas of the twentieth century which, because of its language and setting, is not performed as often as it should be receives a magnificent performance here: the production, singing, and orchestral performance are all superb. A must for all lovers of Janacek and of twentieth-century opera. More than just a supplement to the definitive Mackerras CD recording of the work. Most enthusiastically recommended!

I loved this film, and enjoyed it very much. Netrebko is a most excellent Elvira, and the rest of the cast completely lived up to her. Recommend this DVD highly for anyone who loves opera on film.

It is an excellent presentation of Massenet's opera Manon. Of course, the dream cast of Natalie Dessay and Rolando Villazon contributes enormously to the enjoyment of this DVD. The production is first-class and depicts the life of these women, who are paid for by wealthy suiters, more realistically than in any other production.
Highly recommended.

As it is very hard to match Karajan's Parsifal in music making terms,it is not easy to bypass music of Boehm/Nilsson/Windgassen Tristan dated 1966.In this wonderful DVD we have an excellent orchestra by Baremboim with a wet creamy grandeur which he does not acchieve for instance in Bruckner.Of course J.Meier is not B.Nilsson, but she works. And R. Kollo is also well placed, without his unpleasent trebles, since Tristan is not exactly bel canto.Of course there are some boring moments at Act 3,due to Wagners prolixity ,typical of a time when idle aristocracy could spend seven hours inside Bayreuth Festspielhaus. May be I have a naive brain, however my eyes were not able to distinguish when or if has Tristan died in this stage. Flavio J.Morsch - Brazil

Astounding audience reception of Villazon's virtuosity! Netrebko was great! Characters were most believable and voices simply grand. A lot of fun to watch!

Everything about this recording is about as good as it gets - great photography, wonderful balance between orchestra and singers, and wonderful performances from the singers.

This opera may not have well known or most beautiful melodies, which is the only reason I can't give it five stars; but the plot, the voices, the performances and the costumes are all outstanding. Most important, this DVD has subtitles; so that one can understand the story which, in the case of operas, makes a world of difference.
