I've seen this movie several times and decided to purchase for my library. One of the movies that you can see something new in each time you watch it. A classic that will be around like Sound of Music and Wizard of Oz.

This is by far the best version of "Pride and Prejudice". I believe I have seen every one of them and none compares. Laurence Olivier was great of course as Darcy, but Colin Firth has completely captured the character. I doubt that any one will ever be able to portray Darcy better.
I am extremely satified that I purchased the 10th Anniversary Collector's Edition even though I all ready had the original DVD of the same produecton. It is definitely well worth the price. I strongly recommend it to every one. The DVDs come in a beautifully designed case, and I thoroughly enjoyed the accompanying behind-the-scenes disc. Even though Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle were busy making other movies and could not be on it, the remaining cast members were very entertaining. The accompanying book, ... Read More

If you are fond of this kind of film you should like it. It's a cute little romance. Not serious but very light hearted and somewhat comical. I probably would have given it 4 or 5 stars if the cinematography and directing had been better. I also think the casting was a little blah, with the exception of Gwyneth Paltrow and Alan Cumming.
Paltrow nailed it! I'm not a huge fan of hers but she played the complicated Emma perfectly. Well meaning but trouble making, sweet but spoiled, generous but snobbish. She really made the character charming and believable. Alan Cumming was great to, but when is he not?
I defiantly recommend you give it a shot. It's not a movie you could watch over and over again, but at least once.

A delightful journey into the life of writer Jane Austen, whose character's lives in her books have happier endings than her own. Torn between giving up the man she loves so he may help his impoverished family and please his rich uncle, Jane clings to her passion for the written word to help heal her wounds in the real world. Choosing not to marry another rich suitor because she does not love him, Jane hopes to 'live by her pen'.

Kindle owners hopefully are aware of the wealth of free editions of the classics which are available through Feedbooks and other sources.

I obtained a copy of P&P from feedbooks originally and while it was easy to get and the price was right, the overall quality of the text is not great. I've found several typos, presumably the result of OCR errors and it's somewhat distracting.

Since P&P is one of my wife's favorite books, I was delighted to see
Penguin had released an electronic edition for $0.50 complete with the usual footnotes, essays and maps that one's used to
finding in textbook editions of the classics.

The table of contents is pretty minimal. The headings include the editor's material, and the three volume headings.

For those of you who absolutely loved Mansfield Park, the book, and are hopeless Jane Austen purists this movie will probably disappoint you. If on the other hand, you are like me and are a devoted fan of Jane Austen and a purist about everything else Jane Austen, yet for some reason you didn't especially love Mansfield Park, then you will enjoy this movie. The main characters, Fanny, Edmund, Henry, and Mariah, are extremely well cast and are very good actors and actresses. Fanny's character is a fair bit more decided and strong than in the book, but I was always inclined to think her a little lacking in spine. It follows the main storyline fairly well, only getting a few things at the end rearranged. One thing that they brought into this movie which I wasn't sure belonged in a Jane Austen movie was a sort of abolitionist ... I think, to a certain degree, comparison with Douglas McGrath's 1996 movie featuring Gwyneth Paltrow is inevitable. However, I must alert my reader to the fact that - when I praise this alternate version from Diarmuid Lawrence - I do so with the original novel in mind. This mini-series has not a movie's glamour, nor does Kate Beckinsale match Paltrow in beauty. However, with regards to Jane Austen's beloved work, this is undoubtedly the more faithful adaptation. Beckinsale's portrayal is less flighty and silly then Paltrow's... she carries the character's grace perfectly in every scene. The superb Samantha Morton, despite her slimness, is a perfect Harriet Smith; it is hard to make so stupid a girl endearing, but Morton does it with such apparent ease even her must enthusiastic fans must believe what they see. Gerard Butler's singing made me cringe. Actually, he didn't sing as much as shout in a role that demands an excellent tenor. It killed a movie for me that otherwise was very good. You can do Professor Harold Hill with a non-singer but not the Phantom. Patrick Wilson did a fine job as Raoul. Emma Rossum had youth and innocence applicable to the role, and her singing is passable but immature, not surprising given that she was 18 when she made it. That Webber picked her personally shocks me since there are better singers. Throughout the movie I longed to hear Sarah Brightman but not as much as I wanted to hear Michael Crawford.
