I want to say up front that Helen Mirren's performance as Queen Elizabeth II in this film is first-class, just superb. In fact, this is the most redeeming facet of the movie.

The story is this: Here, we have an intimate glimpse of Queen Elizabeth II (as well as her husband, the Queen Mother, and Prince Charles) during the window of time just before and during the week or so period of time after Princess Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris. The focal point of the movie is the hostile reaction of the British people toward the Queen's cold attitude in regard to Diana's death.

I need to say up front that I'm a fan neither of The Royals nor of the late Princess -- but I AM interested in hearing all about their endless peccadilloes. In fact, this actuality was one of ... Read More

This is a DVD made from earlier films, when the Queen Mother turned 80 and then 90. So, no, it doesn't document her entire life until its end. This apparently was done on film for TV, so it's not as sharp, possibly, as something made originally for DVD. However, that's no real problem, one becomes accustomed in the first couple of minutes. And, of course, so much of the film and photography is from the distant past anyway. I particularly enjoyed the film footage of Queen Elizabeth from during the war and afterward. This is no comprehensive biography, but is an enjoyable visit with one of the dominant personalities of the last century.

I received this DVD as a gift and it was very well appeciated by me. The footage of the coronation rehearsals with the Duchess of Norfolk are amazing - surely some of the most extraordinary footage ever filmed. The Duchess of Norfolk of the time did not convert to Catholicism therefore she could stand in for The Queen.

See also the book "Coronation June 2 1953" by Conrad Frost (ISBN 0 213 16674 7) for a COMPLETE background to the lead-up, rehearsals, snafus, and "insider" revelations attendant upon the greatest coronation we are going to see in our lifetimes.

I found the reviews by the other two reviewers to be superficial and to review such an important DVD in one sentence just reeks of laziness and superciliousness. Surely that reviewer had more to say - but then maybe ... Read More

This marvellous book chronicles a year in the life of the British Royal family and accompanies the brilliant BBC series. It encompasses the work and leisure time of the major figures in the family and quite a bit of the works of the more junior members also. The reader is privy to meetings with heads of state, the British Prime Minister and delegations from overseas countries, and may enjoy many photographs which have never before been seen. I especially enjoyed it as a coffee table book, picking it up and delving into it at the odd moment and loved it so much that I'd recommend it to anyone who likes to keep up with what's happening to the Queen and her family.

Repetitious and ultimately boring (perhpas just like the royal family itself).
Press interviews with the press.
Very few words from the royals themselves.
Same film footage shown over and over again.

Not the most up to date material on The Windsors, but pleasant to view. Disc 1 is Andrew Morton's 50 minute documentary about Elizabeth II. Disc 2 contains DAYS OF MAJESTY(1993), a 103 minute program concerning the 40th anniversary of Elizabeth II's coronation. Disc 3 is called THE MONARCHY, which is a collection of 6-30 minute(actually 24 minute) programs about the Windsors. Interesting material, but there is no "play all" option! For such short programs, a "play all" feature is a must. That is my only criticism, however. These are enjoyable docs for Royalphiles.

For Kultur, whose offerings are sometimes a mixed bag, this is an impressive release. Also, for Kultur, the price isn't too bad. Sorry, Kultur!

This documentary asks compelling questions: monarchies have shrunk to 29, do countries still need them? Will they continue beyond the next few decades? Prince William is mentioned here briefly. They just used his image on the cover because of his pulchritude.

"Family Feud" would ask for the top responses in a survey. However, this documentary did not focus on Sweden, Japan, Monaco, and the other famous monarchies of which many Americans would know. It speaks heavily of Queen Elizabeth, but then it moves to Uganda, Tonga, and Nepal. It is multiracial and it crosses continents. National Geographic looked at a cross-section of the world without being cheesy like that series Leonard Nimoy narrates. I did notice that the smaller the nation, the more likely monarchs themselves were willing to sit for interviews. ... Read More
