this magazine is usually well received among progressive activists although many of us had a major problem with some coverage in the past. i won't get to it at this time but i must say that the last one i've read (?May/June edition) had a very good coverage in the issue of the prison industrial complex, putting human faces behind all the build up of prisons, the absurd increase in the prison population in the U.S. by far leading in the incarceration of our people, young and old alike, the racist system we still live in, etc. also, the coverage for the issue of foreclosure was very thorough and finally shed some light on my questions regarding the reasons why, and who is responsible for this mess. check it out.

Harper's is a terrific magazine. Do NOT however, DO NOT, buy this magazine from Amazon!!! Here is why: the WAIT. Normally, when a person buys a magazine subscription, they get the first magazine the following month. AMAZON TAKES 4-5 MONTHS!!! I bought this subscription for my father whose birthday was in August. He called me in October to sheepishly ask where the magazine was. After complaining, Amazon said they would get it there by November. HUH???!!! Now, I just got an email saying they made an error and it would now ship SOMETIME IN JANUARY!!! Oh, but they were nice enough to make it up to me by offering me a free subscription to Inc. magazine!!! WTF???!!! What does Inc. have even remotely in common with Harpers?! I called Amazon customer service to cancel my order. After I post this, ... Read More

Newsweek is a satisfactory source of information of current events. However, the agency that Amazon uses to handle the subscriptions made errors on my order and was unresponsive to my attempts to reach them to correct it. I will not use Amazon again to subscribe to magazines.

This is the only magazine that I receive that I read cover to cover, then bring to school for my students to read. The articles are short enough to hold your attention but long enough to tell you what you need to know. In every issue there are several articles that are fantastic and the rest are very good, more than you can say for the average magazine!

I subscribed in July waited patiently as instructed for the October issue and when I called Amazon to inquire as to why I had not received it, I was given the run around and ultimately told that even if i never got an issue I also would NEVER get a refund: "We don't refund magazine subscriptions."

I'm sure this is more for the tech minded; but, there's still enough in it for the rest of us. If you have time and enjoy spending it thumbing thru magazines, this one is certainly entertaining. The ads are sleek, the men are handsome and there's tidbits of info for everyone.

I am a fan of the magazine and think it's one of the best news/current affairs publications out there.

However...

my wife and I received a subscription as a wedding gift. It took a more than 4 months to finally get activated. In that time, no one at the economist would help me ('talk to Amazon'), and no one at Amazon would help me - first, I had to get the friend who bought it for us to talk to them, which was a hassle. Second, they told him that everything was fine and that (guess what?) he'd have to chase it up with the economist.

Finally the subscription did surface and the magazines started arriving... like many people, we'd moved after the wedding. It took me several phone calls, emails, and attempts to use the online database (and another two months) to get ... Read More
