I don't know why it took me so long to acquire "Helene" on DVD since I have had a CD of it for many years. Recollecting initial reviews were all positive, I can only chalk it up to inertia. Well, I was delighted with the whole performance and since France is unable to to come up with a qualified Helene, they could do no better than Flott. She is not a conventionally beautiful woman, she is, however, attractive, and skilled enough to convince you that she is beautiful. Besides a performance in the theatre is certainly not as invasive as a video camera. I only wish that in the near future there will be a production of Hoffman that is as good that this; and while Helene is not a substitute I can recommend it to those who enjoy French operetta, are not put off by spoken dialogue, ... High points for the music, singing, train and Cerberus. However, having grown up with a very witty English-language LP of it, I thought that the pedestrian subtitling grossly shortchanged the libretto. And I could have done without the on-stage incest.

As a musical piece, this French operetta is simply outstanding! It has a lot of spectacular arias and scenes that are worth listening to. However, this production from the Opera National De Lyon, does not do a good job of bringing the piece to life. One cannot do a great job of comparing this production to another mainly because there isn't another DVD of this operetta. However, it is evident that this production has some flaws: 1. The singers in this production are clearly Amateurs; they do not sound perfect and a lot of times they produce a very "bland" sound that can be displeasing. 2. The set of this Operetta is also very plain. An operetta that takes place in Paris and depicts the "Parisienne" life should invest in some more expensive sets! Also if you decide to make a modern ... Astounding audience reception of Villazon's virtuosity! Netrebko was great! Characters were most believable and voices simply grand. A lot of fun to watch!

I saw a tape of another production of "Daughter of the Regiment" and it was fantastic. The DVD I received from Amamzon was different, although the cast was the same. The quality of the film was poor, the lighting was bad, and there was a different conductor. All in all, it did not have the same electricity as the first production that I saw.

I am not quite sure about this opera buffa, it is well sung and recorded, but I still do not know Rossini's intention. I have to hear it again to form an intelligent opinion

Having seen this opera many years ago i was rather hazy on the story line but on viewing i found it most enjoyable, especially seeing two great singers once more Lucia popp and Siegried Jerusalem they bought vitality to the production This opera is one that you would have to view several times to get all the subilties, it is fun to watch once you have the knack of the story line Perhaps the most difficult understanding ,is one has the main sections of the opera as a concert piece and you are inclined to forget that the rest of the opera has some charming bits of music in it The chorus work is superb and rousing over all i thoroughly enjoyed the performance and would without hesitation recomend it and forget the movie version that is doing the rounds this stage production is well worth the money spent on obtaining ... I loved this film, and enjoyed it very much. Netrebko is a most excellent Elvira, and the rest of the cast completely lived up to her. Recommend this DVD highly for anyone who loves opera on film.

Despite the fairy tale title, this particular opera is fun for all ages. We think it is the best Rossini opera, and Von Stade is the perfect Cinderella. Our only objection is that the the voices are synched to the singers, but this is a necessay thing for 'movie' format staging. We would put this production on a 'must see' list.
