A first-rate, terrific job of guiding readers trough the basic features of VB .NET 2005, just like it publicizes. Every single chapter, and every section, includes examples that you can either build on yourself or study from the accompanying CD.

If you're either a totally new programmer or slightly experienced newbie to VB programming, this is the book for you. (Experienced programmers should ensure they read the intro/scope material, as this book is NOT for them.) I breezed through this book, and did all of the examples, in about 20 hours. I should rate this book 5-stars, but I give it only 4-stars, because it would have been nice to also include an additional CD of MS SQL 2005 Server Express and expand a bit more on the chapters associated with databases and dataset manipulation ... Excellent, readable, and comprehensive intro to Visual C++ for folks with a smattering of programming knowledge. You don't have to have any C++ experience to use this book, but I do recommend that if you are an absolute beginner to the world of computer programming, you pick up an easier book, say, COBOL for Dummies. I bought this book as a refresher...I've done Visual Basic for years and want to go back to something closer to the machine level--I miss the granularity and sheer power of C++ and I'm tired of the slowness of the .Net line and their buggy frameworks. These Horton C++ books exhibit a friendly and relaxed writing style: I find most programming texts too terse and psychotic for my taste. I picked up a more advanced text from Wrox, Professional C++, to get back to the intermediate level ... Read More

This is a great book.It has a lot of techniques that you would not normally use in your day to day programming tasks. It covers the language properly. Every chapter has actual code that works and that you could use in your projects. The author is definitely a master, and this book proves it.
The book helped me to pass the MS Exam 70-536, .Net Framework 2.0, Application Development Foundation. Most of the exam topics are covered in it.
The organization of the book is good, starts with the basics, slowly going to advanced topics. However I think this book is definitely not for beginners, they will get lost in some chapters.
Overall, I give it 5 stars, it is a great book, well written, well organized, a great reference that every VB programmer should read and have it on their shelf.

Judging from the reviews here, I probably would not recommend this book if you have never programmed (or used "Windows-like" IDE) before. But if you are an experienced C++/Java programmer new to C# and comfortable with the Windows programming environment, I think this is a pretty good place to start.

Pros:
Good overview of C# 2.0. A much smaller book compared to many books out there. Easy to read (you can probably read/skim through the first 200 pages in a couple of hours).

Cons:
You will need other books to supplement this one to learn the language well but I think it's typical.
Probably the same complaint I have against all computer books - still too long for a beginner's book. It's still 500+ pages long.

Note:
The book does not cover WPF, ... Read More

I made a sea-change jump from VC++6.0 to Visual Studio 2008. I miss my old ClassWizard, but it only took a day or so to get familiar with the new methods. Probably the hardest thing to get used to is the change from Alt + E + I to launch Find-In-Files to using Ctrl + Shift + F. Even after weeks of using VS2008, I still do the old key combination.

The executables produced are great and the program functions reliably.

I would easily buy it again.

VS2005 is the best tool ever. i'm using it with Windows XP. and my applications are maily Database applications and Graphics. i program in C++ Win32 Applications , Dot Net(also C++). the performance is amazing. I faced only one problem when connecting to Oracle via Instant Client 10. and read more than one line in GetString(); i dont know is this MS or Oracle Bug or my own . at this point, the debug message does not give a moderate programmer a clue where is the real problem. but still i use MS 2005 on Daily bases and i love the performance and appearance and its compatibilty with all other applications/libraries. it is fun

I had not used Visual Basic for several years before purchasing this book. I had forgotten a lot, and lots of things have changed. As I worked my way through this book, I found the actual content to be extremely useful. There is a good overview of a wide range of topics. The example programs are excellent starting points for understanding the various topics, and most proved easy for me to expand upon.

As I progressed through the book, I would frequently have the desire to use syntax, functionality, examples, etc. that I was sure that I had already read about. Unfortunately, it was not very long before I realized that the index was very underdeveloped for a book containing this much information. The index is a very important part of any good reference book, and is a big weakness of this otherwise good ... Read More
