I bought this DVD because of my addiction to Gilbert & Sullivan, and "Pirates" in particular, but I hesitate to recommend it to someone encountering the opera for the first time (not that there are any other better options on the market, regrettably). It is full of energy and great fun but, as other reviewers have noted, the picture quality is often very poor, and, especially in the choruses, the sound is frequently "muddy". Kevin Kline and the other principals who went on to make the later "Pirates" film are all in good voice here (although I cannot understand why George Rose introduced the irritating nasal whine in "I am an orphan boy" here, which he later repeated in the film - there must be some subtle cultural reference that I am missing). Linda Ronstadt seems less secure in her ... Read More

Two great Gilbert & Sullivan productions together on one DVD. This is a great package. Both are well performed, energetic and entertaining. Several of the cast appear in both performances, including Anthony Warlow and David Hobson.

Trail By Jury is brought forward to modern times. I am not generally in favour of this treatment of Gilbert & Sullivan, although I understand the need to make them as accessible as possible to new audiences. Fortunately, the transformation did not distract from the great performances on show. Anthony Warlow manages to maintain a Scottish accent even while singing in his most unique portrayal of the Learned Judge, while David Hobson brilliantly captures the arrogant attitude of the defendant, Edwin.

HMS Pinafore is one of the best productions ... Read More

For me one of the most engaging moments in the film is when Gilbert, played by Broadbent, encounters Japanese Kendo fighting and especially Japanese theater. This is set up as a prelude to suggesting that an exhibition of Japanese culture Gilbert attends starts him off thinking up the Mikado. Whatever the intentions Broadbent's reactions as the camera focuses on his reactions to the unfolding drama in the play demonstrate in a completely convincing way how a Victorian Londoner would react to a (Noh?) play. He utterly and with an exquisite degree of facial movement replicates a man who doesn't understand the drama he is watching, can barely relate to it, or can only respond to it as a Victorian might, but respects it. Broadbent's depiction of a Victorian popular artist thinking through the artistic problems ... Read More

I originally saw this production over 20 years ago on PBS. It was the first time I saw The Mikado and I thought it was rightfully one of G&S's best works. I have seen a couple of other versions, one in a live professional production ($50 a seat) and another that was televised and I think this is still ther better of the three. Just as a lark I thought I would see if it was somehow available on DVD and I knew William Conrad was in it. All I needed to search was Conrad and Mikado and, by golly, it did exist.

Perfectly fine performances, BUT... this version was filmed on a sound stage for a PBS television production (rather than a live performance.) The result is a rather sterile feel. I much prefer the Opera Australia version with Anthony Warlow, David Hobson, and Colette Mann (which was filmed during a live stage performance.) The applause, laughter and audience reactions make it far more enjoyable than this PBS version.

This is a fine production, as one expects from Opera Australia Those that are familiar with Canada's Stratford Festival version of The Gondoliers will instantly recognise this production, as it is virtually identical. It is, in my opinion however, better performed than it's Canadian counterpart. It is highly energetic and entertaining from start to finish.

The cast is brilliant and includes a "young" David Hobson (Australian audiences will be familiar with David's contributions in more recent years) and the great Dennis Olsen. Unfortunately, Dennis does not play the more traditional comic role of the Duke of Plaza-Toro, but is relegated to the smaller part of Don Alhambra. Both these players, along with the rest of the cast, put in great performances.

One of the many highlights is the choreography (again ... Read More

This is truly one of the most brilliant films ever made and completely under-appreciated. I just wish more people would see it and realize how wonderful it is. A triumph. I'm just heartbroken that it's going out of print in DVD - a total tragedy.

I was dubious about this book. Could a book containing the librettos of all the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas have room for substantial annotations? The answr was that a very thick book can do it. The numbered lines of the libretto on the right page are keyed to plentiful annotations on the facing left. A very satisfactory "Annotated G & S" for G & S lovers.

This is one of the 1982 series of G&S productions produced by the BBC. Some of the special effects look cheesy, but of all this series I thought it translated best to the screen.

I loved the Act I finale, with the Peers all misinterpreting the relationship between Strephon and his eternally youthful fairy mother ("Her age upon the date/ of his birth was minus eight/ if she's seventeen and he is five-and-twenty!")

And of course, the Lord Chancellor's Nightmare Song was terrific.

In all, a great introduction to this gem of an opera.
