Terror and Consent has opened my eyes and made me aware that warfare in the 21st century has changed drastrically. I picked up on this book when I heard Senator McCain claim he takes it everywhere. We no longer will be fighting nation states like China or Russia unless there is a huge miscalulation; rather we will be in conflict with market states; that is those states without borders where globalization has transformed war from nation states waging war against one another using conventional forces to "stateless forces" waging terror against civilans. Now I understand why double the military force in Iraq was needed. Not to win the battle but to win the peace and protect the populace from terror as we help them rebuild their society. This book is a hard, but necessary read for anyone ... Read More

RAJESH C. OZA, ANUPAMA R. OZA, and SIDDHARTHA R. OZA

"Growth takes place whenever a challenge evokes a successful response that, in turn, evokes a further and different challenge. We have not found any intrinsic reason why this process should not repeat itself indefinitely, even though a majority of civilizations have failed, as a matter of historical fact."--Arnold J. Toynbee, A Study of History

This piece--co-authored by a middle-aged father, his recently-graduated-from-college daughter, and his college-going son--is a collective engagement with Fareed Zakaria's The Post-American World. The father is anxious about how effectively Americans are utilizing the advantage of world-class universities; the daughter is seeking to address the inequity of unequal access to higher education; ... Well laid out sequel to "Paradise and power". All the more intriguing since it was written before the Russian invasion of Georgia--ominiously predictable from the pages of Kagan's book. Let's hope his transatlantic call to action is heeded.

This review is more about the product return service than the book itself, though it is excellent. The book was first shipped to me damaged, but amazon had a very easy to use and straightforward return policy, and they replaced the book with no charge. Other than the wait, there was very little inconvenence. Well done Amazon.

Someone wise once said: to those who understand no explanation is necessary; to those who do not, none is possible. Citing "human rights," Meyer and her minions agonize over such practices as waterboarding, sleep deprivation and such. This reveals that she knows nothing about torture as it has been practised our enemies over millenia. The irony of this is that the very people who denounce these interrogative techinques are the same ones who turn a blind eye to the inhuman, agonizingly painful destruction on helpless infants in the cause of "privacy" and "the right to choose." How can any sensible person take the likes of the irrational Bush haters such as Mayer seriously? The book reveals nothing that has not been in the news. Did Mayer complain about Clinton administration policy that Muslim attacks were to be treated as criminal ... Read More

If you are a traditionalist and are expecting the usual treatise to counterinsurgency then you will be disappointed. This is an out of the box approach to war in the 21st century. This book is not modern updates to Galula, Kitson, Mao or Trinquier. Examples of some of the topics covered include; "Superempowered Competition", "Open Source Warfare", and Guerrilla Entrepreneurs". This book is not for the faint of heart, it will destroy your conventional notions about counterinsurgency and will require you to completely rethink the "Graduate" level art of war.

Bob Woodward has provided another candid, incisive, and informative window into the personalities, key players, and power brokers who have helped shape and implement the Bush administration's policy in Iraq. He provides detailed accounts of candid, sometimes back room discussions among the key figures who have shaped American military policy in Iraq in the waning years of the Bush administration. This includes figures such as Bush's key advisor Stephen Hadley, Peter Pace, Stephen Petraeus as well as the obvious Bush officials Condi Rice and Dick Cheney.

Woodward's portrait is well-balanced and highlights both shortcomings, such as internal debates about Iraq policy (or lack thereof) among his senior aides; to the apparent success of measures like "the surge" and "Anbar Awakening." He then turns to providing some developing impressions ... Read More

I could not set this book down. Three things made it special:

1) The biography and credentials of the author: a West Point grad; retired Army Colonel; Boston College professor; and father of an Army Lieutenant recently killed in Iraq.
2) The writing, which is compact and lively. No point is made without many facts and examples, but no point is flogged to death.
3) The author's underlying ambivalence about America's culture, politics, history, ideology. He does not hate America but struggles to understand it. He weaves observations about America's foundational values into powerful conclusions about the state of our country.

The anti-Bush crowd loves this book, but it is much more than a rant against the current administration. It gave me plenty to think about.

"Lies, damned lies, and statistics." Nassim Taleb exudes a healthy disdain for traditional "Gaussian" statistics in his popular manifesto, The Black Swan. Jaded and toughened by several years as a derivatives trader on Wall Street, Taleb emerged from the profession with unique insights on how the world is missing the boat on analyzing risk. The book is certainly eye-opening, endeavoring to make its point in so many eclectic fashions that it's best consumed in small doses. It's a bit like reading Soros. The author doesn't pretend to toe the line on traditional perspective. In fact, he embraces such a healthy admiration for himself and his contrarian idea that it pays to step back every few pages and contemplate his assertions rather than taking too much of it at face value.

To his credit, Taleb makes some prescient comments in the book, originally ... Read More
