Morricone is simply brilliant, and it is never more obvious than here on The Mission.

Derivative? Repetitive? Yes, and again, yes (see, that was derivative 'caused I stole from another review, and repetitive 'cause i answered... twice). But that's not only OK, it's almost required! And they told you, too, before you paid a penny! Go ahead, look- it's right there, hiding in plain sight. The rest of the class can wait quietly with their heads down on their desks.
Waiting...

"Original Soundtrack From The Motion Picture"!!! Come on kids- it's a soundtrack from a film, and films are derivative, and repeat symbolism and, well, just come on! It's a soundtrack to a motion picture, and as such it is among the top soundtracks ever.

Yes, and again, yes: it ... Read More

Horrible, horrible recording. Yo Yo Ma, as usual, gives a great performance. The sound engineer, Richard King, should be run out of his profession. The recording is muddled, piano and other instruments are too loud, and even the sound of the cello is occasionally distorted. You can hear Ma breathing and other distracting sounds during the course of certain songs.

My nephew mentioned his desire to hear some classical music (Yo-Yo Ma, especially) on the boring trips back & forth from college. He really seemed to enjoy receiving the CD for Christmas!

I was excited to get this as a gift. Then I played it. I expected some fun and Sambas. Pretty dull, very little cello, not even pleasant as background music. I put my copy in the pile for Good Will.

Not exactly sure what I would do without these recordings. A world without Bach: a scary thought. My pulse slackens a bit each time I put these on. Relaxing, sure, but also tremendously moving. A perfect antidote for the trivial drone, distraction, and bustle of our post-capitalist world. No need to go buy new-age computer glitch world-music ambience; this is sonic therapy, written centuries before we needed it.

Look, this cd has its bright spots, but there is so much that just didn't work out with it. Firstly, the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra plays with its usual energy and authentic approach, but Yo Yo plays in a modern style. The two just don't mix. I keep expecting to hear some decorations to the cello line but there just aren't any. Some of the music is just played too fast such as the slow movement of the double cello concerto. It was almost as if playing baroque style for Yo Yo Ma just meant playing it faster. The slow movement of the winter concerto was completely empty of any kind of decoration or originality. It was just straight and flat.
And the transcriptions! Oh gosh, why transcribe music that is not suited to the cello? Vivaldi fans will miss the viola d'amore in the concerto RV 540. ... Read More

I watched The Mission in a class that I'm currently taking about the Literature of Human Rights in Latin America. The Mission is about the colonial time in South America and shows the treatment of indigenous people and human rights. If we really focus on this movie as a human rights oriented, we could see how the Indians were being treated by the Europeans. They would capture, slave them, exploit them, and the Indians have no saying in the matter; for the Europeans they were like animals, they have no voice, they were nothing. So they could do as they wished with them.
On the other hand there were the Jesuits who saw them as humans who needed guidance, understanding, someone who needed to be converted into Christianity, trying to save them.
I see this movie as a way to create awareness about the ... Read More

I bought this because I love to listen to cellos. On my Mark&Daniels, the sound is first rate, overall. ButI would have loved to have the cello given a bit more prominence, audio-wise. The accompanying instruments are aggressive enough to drown the cello out in the musical pictures, except for the first selection which is just fabulous.
