I bought this based on the many rave reviews, but was disappointed. I've been playing the ukulele for about 2 months, and was looking for something to really accelerate my progress. In particular, I was hoping for good instruction on right-hand technique. I really enjoyed learning the split strum. Unfortunately, although the section on right-hand strums covers the basic split strum slowly and in detail, all of the variations and embellishments are explained outside the context of the basic strum, then shown in context only at full speed. This made it very difficult to figure EXACTLY out how to incorporate embellishments such as the initial double strum, the thumb roll, etc. into the context of the basic technique. Okay, this is really picky of me, but the order of the notes on this pitchpipe is a bit inconvenient. I've seen others that are ordered such that one need only rotate the pitchpipe in one direction (left to right) rather than having to flip it over to move from C to E. I told you it was picky! But, it's a bit strange. I'm not sure why it was designed this way. That said, it works great so I'm giving it a 4/5 stars.

This is the book that I first used to learn chords when I was a kid. It is lean, to the point, and a great first book whether your goal is to learn the ukulele or to eventually move up to the guitar. There are many other books that are thicker, newer, and more modern. But few will kickstart the learning process like this one. Mel Bay was a master musician and a wonderful teacher. He still has much to offer.

I would consider myself an advanced beginner at this point, having messed 'round a bit with the guitar and mandolin over the years. My dad bought me an ukulele when we were in Hawaii, and I have found it much easier to play than the guitar. I already have a pretty good understanding of music theory, having played the piano for about 40 years, and this book is very helpful translating the building blocks of "how music is made" into techniques of "making music." As with any skill, there are patterns of playing and the proverbial tricks of the trade to the ukulele, and the book describes them very nicely and understandably. I bought these strings to replace the rather flat and dull sounding original strings on my Uke. I noticed a difference right away, they sound brigher and the instrument is a little louder as well. They aren't going to make a cheap Ukulele sound like an expensive one, but for a few dollars they made a nice improvement. I went from clear strings to black which I think made my Uke look better as well. I will buy them again.

This is a perfect book for beginners. I bought an ukulele, and this book three years ago, and now I'm playing in bands and having a great time. One of the things I like most about this particular book (which I would like to see in other books) is that simplified chords are given for each song, with more complex chords in parentheses, so that as you progress you can return to songs you've learned earlier in the book and play them with more complexity.
