Very well written and keeps your attention. Very detailed and fact based. The author is as unbiased as they come. I came into this book embarassingly ignorant about international politics, especially the events leading up to September 11, 2001. I feel thankful toward the author for putting together such complex information in a straight forward, but captivating way - a way that lets even the most unaware reader begin to understand the whirlwind of money, politics, fanaticism, and international counter-interests that intersect to create the horrors of tomorrow. I was amazed at how much the US government played a hand in fostering Taliban and al Qaeda. A hand full of tunnel vissioned, post cold-war mongering CIA agents and senators operating with a unconscionable amount power financed, encouraged, ... Read More

I had the feeling reading this book that I was being let in on a secret that many want to keep hidden from public consumption. That is either the case or Mr. Baer has written a very believable novel. I don't know which to believe. It was well written and compelling. One of the better spy novels written by a real spy. You couldn't ask for more. This is a book that you will have to read between the lines to fully get everything out of it.

After watching an interview with Gary Shroen on FOX TV, I knew this was going to be an interesting read. It is a very good description of the CIA spearhead into the war against Osama Bin Laden. "First In" leaves the reader with an understanding of how the CIA works and doesn't work. The government beauracracy into the operation is unbelievable at times. The reader must read "Jawbreaker" also to get a better understanding of the mission. Both books give a picture of the tribal factions in that part of the world an why this war is different.

Befitting a decorated ex-CIA head, this book by George Tenet is "artful political and moral ambiguity at its transparent best." It is equal parts: "after-the-fact expose" of Bush/Cheney Machiavellian incompetence, a chronology of bureaucratic in-fighting and turf battles; Tenet's own self-serving "CYA rationalizations" (especially for his most embarrassing and ignominious "slam dunk" moment); a summary of CIA history including many of it recent exploits in the new era of terrorism; plus a lot of inchoate soul-searching and "insider bureaucratic baseball."

Along with other "shunted aside" Bush insiders, Tenet, is yet another "come-to-Jesus" confessor who has belatedly confirmed what most of us now already know: that even as Cheney and Bush were entering the White House, Iraqi II was already a fait accompli: "a war in search of a ... Read More

I was quite enthused to get this book. I'm very interested in the CIA and covert ops as well as the history of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. However, this book was a dissapointment in several ways. First of all, what I was most interested in learning more about was the abysmal decision to let bin Laden escape at Tora Bora. Who made the decision and why? Unfortunately the author spends only a few pages on that question. (To be fair a significant part of the discussion is blacked out). Also, I found the tone of the book to be very self serving. Mr. Bernsten presents himself as some kind of CIA superhero. He never makes a mistake, gets scared, and can go for days without sleep. At the same time he is constantly being let down by mindless cowardly bureacrats back home. However, even with those critiques I have to admit the book was a page turner, ... Read More

Mark Lowenthal, a long-time veteran of the Intelligence Community, is the author of "Intelligence: From Secrets to Policy," a superb introduction into the American Intelligence Community and its transition from the long Cold War against the Soviets to the current battles against rogues states and transnational terrorists.

Lowenthal writes at the survey level for an audience with a general understanding of American history and governmental processes but limited knowledge of how intelligence fits into either. In sequencial steps, Lowenthal explains what intelligence is supposed to be, how U.S. intelligence developed, and how the Intelligence Community operates. He reviews the intelligence process, the major collection disciplines, and the moving parts of subcomponents such as analysis, counterintelligence, and covert action. The last chapters explore ... This book by the first head of the CIA is a great introduction or overview of the basics of intelligence (with some tradecraft) and the collection and analytical cycles.

It is broad in scope. It covers most all of the bases. The detail and explanation in the foundations and fundamentals are there for the beginning student. If you read one book on intelligence - this is probably it. The focus of this book is on HUMINT.

This is without a doubt the best non-fiction book I have ever read. The plot, the characters and the writing were all brilliant. A truly exhilirating thrill ride. I couldn't put the book down - in fact, I missed my bus stop reading the book.

When I finished, I felt that I had lost my close friends, and that my life had just gotten a little less exciting.

If you want a thrilling, titilating, over-the top book that never lets up in terms of entertainment, than this is the book for you.

If there were six, seven or even eight stars, I would award those to this book too.

In a word - Awesome!
