I have never tried composting before, so I wanted the big picture. I researched online and this seems to be the undisputed classic book on the subject. It seems to tell ALL you need to know to manage your composting, and in as few words as possible.

This thermometer worked well for a while then got stuck at 80 deg. I think the shaft twisted slightly apart from the face part as I pulled it out of one of my compost piles.

Honestly, we were getting rats. Lifting the compost off the ground solved the problem and now we get faster compost. It's easy to turn so the compost actually gets turned regularly which yields faster composting. We can fit our yard cart underneath so moving the newly made compost is easy too.

I am so pleased with my new Achla spinning composter. It was a fraction of the cost of the ComposTumbler that I was also considering. It was also quite simple to set up, and easy to turn, even completely full. I believe the black plastic exterior helps to heat the contents and facilitate the composting process. Although I filled it with pungent horse manure and kitchen scraps, there is little to no smell unless the lid is open. I will write back and let you know how my first batch of compost turns out.

Good construction and excellent odor control (though I agree you should empty it into your compost bin at least once a week, to avoid bad odors when you take off the lid). I took the tip of another user and put used plastic vegetable bags from the grocery store to line the container--which makes it very easy to keep clean.

The composter I purchased from Gaiam arrived incomplete; in fact it was missing several pieces. I contacted the manufacturer of this unit and no one returned my call. I followed Gaiam's return intructions, which were fairly clear and which also cost me $35 FedEx to return. I have not received an exchange unit yet (which is what I requested). I did receive an email from Gaiam explaining that they received the composter in return and that a new one would be coming to me in December. Apparently they are out of them at this time (11/13/2008). I will update when this matter resolves. TP

I was disapointed when I unwrapped this item, very expensive for what it is. a loose weave screen would do the same job.

Well it is a composter. Its not a plasma screen TV. Its not all that complicated and not that hard to screw up. I have owned other composters and this one has some nice qualities. The composter is fairly attractive. It adds a point of interest in the yard. The lid is a flip top. A lot of other composters have a lid you have to take off while you work. This makes access much faster and easier. Lids also tend to attract spiders and other denizens of the yard. The faster you can get in and out the better. It is also very easy to put together. No tools needed and once you figure out how the sides snap together you'll have it up and running in minutes. Delivery was fast and the composter was well packaged.
