Opera News is a magazine dedicated to opera and the individual talents that contribute to the full opera production. This magazine offers a way to find out dates for upcoming operas; backgrounds on some of the more popular opera stars; reviews of operas and opera related media; interviews; etc.

I am not a man of the arts by any stretch and it's a rare day that finds me sitting in a theater seat, watching a bunch of stage performers sing and dance. But I still like Opera News nonetheless and I can understand fully why fans of opera enjoy it so much. It covers the big operas, the big stars, and much more.

Articles about specific performers are common in this magazine but Opera News isn't just a magazine about opera performers and the long hours they labor for their ... Read More

A book about a world-class opera singer will be read mainly by two categories of people: singers and opera lovers. To strike a balance that will please both of the interested parties is tricky. Too much technical stuff and you alienate the second camp. Not enough technical stuff and you disappoint the first camp. Fleming, by and large, manages to satisfy both sides of the equation. She acknowledges the help of novelist Ann Patchett's "silent work on paper", but it is clear from the passages on vocal technique that much of it is written in her own words, confirming one's impression from her spoken interviews that she is fluent and articulate (she is also fluent in German and French and can get by in Italian). The book is sensibly divided up into chapters that focus on different facets of the singer's ... Read More

A Soprano on Her Head was an enlightening and fun book to read. I've lent it out to my students as well with recommendations to read a chapter or two at a time.

The examples are vivid and easy to try at home. I enjoyed this creative look at how our bodies can work for us and against us when we're making music.

This has long been one of my favourite books on singing. I lent my copy to a fellow singer and never saw it again. Fortunately I recently managed to buy a second-hand first edition, and this copy is never going to leave my house. If you are a singer, it is one of those books that you will want to read again and again at various points in your career, gaining more insight from it at each reading and as your experience grows. Jerome Hines interviewed a selection of forty opera singers - including Domingo, Pavarotti, Ponselle and Sutherland (to name four of the best known) - and prompted them to voice their opinions, experiences, impressions, sensations, tricks of the trade and routines on what is so often invisible, intangible and elusive about the art of singing. He sensibly chose, for the most part, singers ... Read More

The book Singing in French has been my close friend for many years. In fact, I have just bought a new one since my first one fell apart from constant use! The information presented here is first-class with no detail left unattended. It remains (since 1979) THE major book on French diction for classical singers. Thomas Grubb explains everything in detail so clearly. He knows from experience what a singer's reaction will be and he is able to address that at the outset.Thomas Grubb is not only an expert on French diction, but also a wonderful pianist, vocal coach and an impeccable artist. This book is a must read! Grubb includes detailed repertoire for each category of voice. To singers, this is simply a French diction bible!

I bought this book mainly for the use of one song for a callback. Using and installing the CD software was fairly easy and helped a ton when it came time for the callback audition. It's nice to use the software (Amazing Slow Downer)(funny name)) to slow down, and speed up the tempo you would like to rehearse your songs with. The CDs are not perfect, but it can be put to good use when you don't have the time or money to go to a voice teacher to work on a song. I normally sing Soprano and not Mezzo-Soprano, but this book has many useful songs and is a good workout for stretching vocal range down, if you are used to singing in the upper stratosphere.

Overall, very appealing. Bright, sharp visuals; full crisp sound; mostly good cast. Weaknesses, surprisingly, is Rene Fleming at the time who was about 30 pounds overweight and who's voice as yet had no dynamics. Also, staging a bit crude and minimalist. Also, not widescreen. So, better than many but not quite satisfying.

This book is the best thing for the female actress/singer. It has a number of wonderful songs from all sorts of different musicals, and they're great for using in auditions or just to mess around and sing to when you're bored. The arrangements are *NOT* beginner level by any means, so an accompanist or a CD would be needed to play with you if you were to use it for something.

It includes wonderful songs that are just perfect for the alto/mezzo-soprano range and give ample opportunity to try out your "belting" technique. I'm a singer/actress myself, and a future music teacher. This will most definitely come in handy when I'm teaching high school choir. :)

A very valuable book, not only for those who have suffered a stroke, but for those whose loved ones have. My husband suffered a massive stroke in 2002, several TAI's, and 2006 diagnosed with Alzheimer's. The book shows how small steps are the so important and not overwhelming for the person. Above all treating the patient and loved one with DIGNITY! Take charge of and be involved every step of the way.

I remember seeing this live original broadcast, and it was thrilling then. Pavarotti and Scotto are at their best, and Levine supports them and the rest of the cast perfectly. I am glad I went looking for it, and recommend it to any Puccini or Pavarotti lover.
