Everyone should be able to view Hayao Miyazaki animation. This film is no exception. You must see these films more than once. Put the setup in Japanese and English subtitles to get a better effect. Watch the films once for the story and then for the background animation. Superb!!!!

I can't wait for Studio Ghibli's next film to come to the U.S.. It is currently showing in Japan.

I first saw this film in 2004. I'm a voice-actor and was going to be voicing an anime series. I asked around to see what the best films and series were and, of course, Myiaskai's films were highly recommended. I instantly fell in love with this film and it started me on the journey of seeing all of the films produced by Studio Gibli. I now have a 2 year old son and bought it to share with him, although I fell in love with it as an adult. It is my favorite film of any genre (not just children's). Give it a watch, then start your own Myisaki collection!

I love almost all of Miyazaki's works (with the exception of Porco Rosso), and Castle in the Sky is no different. Miyazaki's story-telling style tends to be rather slow-paced, which is fine, but I really enjoyed this movie for its faster, more energetic pacing. Almost immediately, the action starts, and it doesn't let up until the momentous climax.
The story itself is filled with entertaining fantasy elements- including sky pirates, princesses, and exciting chase scenes. Overall, the story is not too deep (there is some environmentalist themes in there), it is more of a adventure-driven tale. While watching this movie, I was repeatedly reminded of some of my favorite RPG games-- and that's a good thing. Castle in the Sky is also helped along with some very humorous parts (especially Dola), so it never ... Read More

I bought this DVD with a little trepidation after reading some of the more critical reviews on Amazon. While I'm glad I read the criticisms before buying this DVD (I always find that critical reviews tell me more about the viewing experience I'm likely to have), I am really glad that they didn't put me off buying what is undoubtedly a masterpiece of anime and a wonderful introduction to the genre.

Basically, the only anime I've seen until now (apart from a few episodes of various minor league TV shows) was Steamboy, and while I found Steamboy entertaining, Nausicaa blows it away in terms of the tightness of its writing, the epic sweep of its story, the direction and the voice acting of the mostly American cast. While the visuals seem a little dated by today's standards, the story and the production more ... Read More

My favorite Ghibli film by far, Porco Rosso is unique among the other works by the studio in achieving the same sense of magic and wonderment while being set firmly in the real world. There are other enjoyable works set in reality such as My Neighbor the Yamadas or I can Hear the Sea, but the charm in Porco Rosso is grander, at the same time more subtle.

You know those pathetic hollywood action flick commercials? - the ones that say something like "this is a hero who can triumph over anything...except his past". Porco Rosso is essentially that, except here we see what happens when the film-maker actually commits to bringing depth to the characters and the world around, instead of making passing references like most hollywood films do. Porco's past is revealed, almost seductively, over the entire film.

Most reviewers seem to count this as a rather mediocre Studio Ghibli effort. Oddly though, it's my favorite. I really enjoy the fairy-tale feel of this movie; it has a heavy dose of fantasy elements that really keep you from getting bored. I also found the characters to be cute and funny (especially Muta). I've watched The Cat Returns several times already, and it just never gets old. Thus, the creators did a very good job of keeping the story lively and imaginative enough to keep the viewer interested. For example, there's a scene where Haru (the protagonist) is being transported to the Cat Kingdom while riding on the backs of several cats. It's a very visually interesting scene, as well as being an imaginative mode of transportation.
Another aspect I love about this movie is the pacing - there is never a dull moment. When ... Read More

I rarely take the time to review movies or any other products that I order online, even if I really like them. But this is a true standout.

This is a tremendous film. It's focus is an aspect of WWII and the use of the atomic bomb that westerners, including myself, have managed to ignore. It concerns the lives of Japanese commoners during and after the war.
Anyway, I am a big tough guy, not prone to emotional displays of any type, but I really cried after this movie. I mean that I cried hard. Blubbered.

The director develops these characters amazingly well. I felt like I knew them and loved them. I felt such pain for them. The idea that kids in Japan really did suffer like that was driven into me. I haven't yet been able to bring myself to watch it again, but everyone should see it once.

Incidentally, ... Read More
