This is a great film. The actors are absolutely first rate: Theron must have gained 30 pounds for the part and is completely unrecognizable and thuggishly ugly; Ricci is a kind of mousy yet complicit accomplice, greedy for experience. The two meet and find an unusal synergy: Theron is a seriously troubled, alcoholic hooker with a horrible past and prone to violent rage, and Ricci is a lesbian trying to escape her prying family. Somehow, they find love in a completely believable way. In addition, the story is rivetting. To maintain their life style and express her rage, Theron goes on a murderous rampage of robbery and murder, after killing a brutal rapist. In a way, she is searching for justice, but gets crazier as she continues and feels increasingly desperate to maintain Ricci's love, ... Read More

I thought this was an excellent movie. I saw it many years ago. It was really sad to watch certain parts of the movie.

I really think that EVERYONE should watch this movie to get an understanding about the Gay lifestyle and what they go thru. Gay people want the same rights as heterosexuals... and why shouldn't they have it?

Whats so wrong about falling in love with someone of the same sex? So what? Who are they hurting? So men fall in love with men and women fall in love with women. Big Deal. If it makes them happy and that's who they choose then why not? Who are we to judge?

People need to open their eyes and their hearts and just realize that they're PEOPLE who just happen to love the SAME SEX!

Just... watch the movie. It really is a Great movie :):) ... Read More

Not one of my favorite Lesbian movies, but I ordered it because everyone said I should own a copy. It was a typical so-so movie...cute chick mets another cute chick, they fall in love, both have issues that tear them apart, they get back together.

he movie tends to deal with prejudice in its forms...and the message is...prejudice is BAD. And we hear it over and over and over again.

My favorite character was the transgendered mtf. S/he made the film interesting, otherwise it was a so-so film.

*** 2005. Written and directed by Duncan Tucker. Two Academy awards nominations (song and actress) and Golden Globe earned by Felicity Huffman. A transsexual, on the verge of being operated must drive across the U.S. in the company of his son, a juvenile delinquent. Clichés and clichés. The redeeming and edifying road movie is a common theme of American cinema; just think, for instance about Don Siegel's Two Mules For Sister Sara (cowboy and nun) or Barry Levinson's Rain Man (Special Edition) (yuppie and autistic person). The only original element of TRANSAMERICA is the decision to ask an actress to play a male would-be transsexual. Apart from that, nothing new under the sun. Already forgotten.

This movie is very affecting, and well deserves the numerous favorable reviews here.

Like many, I found the film almost shattering emotionally, with a pervasive gloom and bitterness that it is hard to describe in words. One is left with the feeling of wasted lives in an emotional and cultural desert of utter loneliness. Rural Wyoming and Texas of course were and are stuck in a kind of time warp circa 1900, dominated by the most intense fundamentalism and bigotry imaginable. Gay men in such a climate must be invisible if they wish to survive. Although the movie melodramatises this a bit, it is quite true that gay men are in physical danger in such places even today, and certainly cannot make a secure living there.

It is ironic however that neither of the leads is/was gay, at least not officially, nor ... Read More

And I am glad they know I love them, because this movie was not good.

I chose it based off of the numerous glowing reviews and I've never been so disappointed by Amazon critics.

The writing is awful. The music is sappy. There are too many unimportant unfulfilled subplots throughout. The reference to "The Raptor" is never completely explained. And last but not least, wonderful, wonderful Graham Greene is wasted in this film.

I truly wanted to care about Paulie - but I found her unsympathetic. I didn't care if she was happy - I just wanted her off of my screen! Mouse (Mary) seemed to have a very pointless role - it seemed as if she just wandered into the film, mistook it for realife and got snagged into drama that was too far fetched to be believable.

I was very disappointed. ... Read More
