This is a wonderful two-disc edition. I only owned this movie on two videos so you can just imagine the excitement I had getting all the extras that went with this! It is so worth owning and the price is wonderful for such a treasure. It gives great background and is most enjoyable to see all the kids in the movie as grown ups and to also hear Julie Andrews speaking with Christopher Plummer. A true winner!

They don't make movies like the "The King and I" anymore. This movie is one of the classics that we sit down with our kids and watch once a year or so.

The plot is a solid telling of extream culture clash, pride, and love... all wrapped up the some of the best music and dancing ever put on film ("Shall We Dance" is one of the most memorable things I have ever seen). The acting is top rate and the sets are fantastic.

Don't miss this one and share it with your kids, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Based on Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet and set in modern New York with rival gangs. This is a great musical! Bernstein's score is a masterpiece of vocal and instrumental arrangements! The sets are a masterpiece of colour and design! The dancing is glorious! The singing is passionate! And it has a raw yet romantic feel. The director has captured a unique and surreal world and has created what I consider the most extraordinary dramatic musical ever made!

We received it from NetFlix, she watched it 3x in a row! Bought it for a Christmas present. Gene Kelly is fabulous, and Donald O'Connor's athleticism and stamina in "Make 'Em Laugh" is amazing. Great song and dance numbers for any age.

Broadway was just a string of Variety shows until "South Pacific". Everything changed after that. This DVD is a wonderful experience.

I was disappointed because I thought I had a DVD, but missed the VHS on the item. It was cheap, so I got excited and bought it. When it came, I saw the box and knew why it was cheap. It was totally my fault, so can't blame the seller. I will be more careful next time. We don't own a VHS player, so it was a waste of money for me. I gave it to my church for a yard sale. It taught me a good lesson to pay attention.

"Hello, Dolly!" is one of those huge-budgeted musicals made after the incredible success of "The Sound of Music." Lightning was reluctant to strike twice, however, and subsequent, bloated musicals like "Paint Your Wagon," "Dr. Dolittle," "Star" and "Darling Lili" tanked at the box office. "Hello, Dolly!" seemed a safe bet. It was based on a hit Broadway show, starred Barbra Streisand -- fresh from her Oscar-winning role in "Funny Girl" -- in the title role, had a score by Jerry Herman and a script by Ernest Lehman ("North By Northwest"), and was directed by Gene Kelly, a guy who knew his way around musical movies. Yet the result was an overly long dud with Streisand monumentally miscast. Dolly should have been played by an older actress. Streisand mugs unrestrainedly and her performance never ... Read More

If you own only one classic musical film get this one first. It is a wonderful integration of music into a story. A brilliant translation to the wide screen. And Topol is outstanding in his somewhat underplayed (relatively speaking) performance which allows the rest of the cast their moments of glory. It may not represent the poverty of the Russian shtetl, but it is a warm, ingratiating story of how one man came to accept the modern world. And a little bit of ancestral cultural feeling. And shows why groups often reject change as it tears down the traditions that sustain their human pride in a dizzy political mire that was Eastern Europe for Jewry. Just wonderful technically in its use of the wide canvas of Panavision. Let's look for a blu ray DVD soon...

The movie is a classic, just a bad one. It's been a while since I've seen it, but the other reviews really helped jog my memory. The movie was shallow and contrived. The main character of a movie should be liked by the audience, but Holly failed to catch my attention or respect. Her unhappiness and lack of self confidence is no excuse for her selfishness. I might have given this move a 3 star if not for the hype. The over the top praise this movie has recieved is unbelievable! I can't help being disappointed in the people who gave it a 5 star. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but still. I agree with a reviewer who wrote that Breakfast at Tiffany's is so beloved because Audrey Hepburn is in it and because the movie is in color. It's pretty irritating that some people would judge a movie by it's actors ... Read More
