Disney released its 35th full-length film in early 1997 and much like all Disney films be prepared for musical numbers to tell the story.....but they are done by Alan Menken....so it isn't all that bad. The plot is set early in the film: Hades wishes to over-throw Mt. Olympus and imprison the legendary gods that live atop the mystical mountain. So Hades summons the sisters of fate to predict the outcome - their forecast is anything but reassuring. A child will be born on Olympus that will defeat Hades' plot - if Hercules fights Hades will lose. I always liked this movie, but it seemed over-edited, like there was too much missing. It turns out there was, and with this 10th Anniversary DVD release, Disney finally fixed those problems with storyline and emotional impact, notably with the inclusion of the duet "If I Never Knew You." I hadn't seen this movie since the VHS release, which didn't look good: the bright colors bled into each other on tape. Apparently, the earlier DVD release wasn't that great, either. But THIS release shows just how gorgeous this film really is: the colors are simply amazing, and the widescreen shows how striking the background art is (the design for the forest scenes reminds me of "Sleeping Beauty," with a lot of vertical/horizontal contrast used.) Somewhere in 2000, Disney quietly launched a special 2 disc collector's edition of "Tarzan" the same year as its paltry one disc edition. For some reason it advertised the one disc version heavily, which is a shame because the collector's edition is a gem not to be missed by fans. Unfortunately I didn't know about it until years after its release, and by then it was out of print, hard to find, and expensive. Luckily I found a copy that was decently priced, and was finally able to get my hands on this remarkable edition. I see this as the "Tarzan" DVD for adults: instead of cartoony illustrations on the jacket, there's Glen Keane's famous sketch of Tarzan peering at you with those intense eyes. This movie has sentimental value for me.. as well as it's hilarious... i've loved it since i was a kid.. had it on vhs... lost it as a kid.. wanted to buy it again now that i'm adult. i'm sure one day my kids will enjoy it as well.. when i have them.

One of the best Disney movies, Beauty and the Beast (based on the fairytale of the same name) came during the golden years of the 90s where Disney could do no wrong. Along with the classic movie, you can watch the special edition (with a whole new animated song sequence thrown in almost seamlessly) or the in-progress edition which is self explanatory. My favorite extras were the character development sketches. It was amazing to see how much characters like the Beast, Gaston and LaFoo evolved from their original incarnations!
