1.A Town Like Alice by: Nevil Shute

 : A Town Like Alice
Written on two levels, this tale has much to offer. Superficially the Australian novelist and aviator, Nevil Shute weaves a suspenseful roller coaster story energized by life altering events that happen to ordinary people in little known locales in Malaya and Australia. Beneath the surface if you care to look for Aesopian conclusions there is a feast of commentary on the British character. Without revealing too much let me simply say that more respect is lavished on those who fully adopt the land they live in when compared to those who don't. Complacency in the face of danger, inability to adapt as conditions change, and unrealistic hopes contrast with courage, perserverence and ingenuity. Read this book; the journey is intriguing.
And if you're like me you'll add a number of remote destinations ... Read More

If you are a fan of Hayley Mills then you will love this film. It is a great family film/series and is somewhat educational to boot.

I have always liked Armand Assante, and he doesn't disappoint in this movie. It's a very compelling story about the horrors of someone in some country deciding to push the nuke button. Rachael Ward does a good job portraying a maturing hedonist, who as the story unfolds indulges herself in a somewhat complicated love triangle. All in all, the movie is definitely worth watching.

It is painful when you have to review a film for what it IS, without influencing your opinons with how great the author is, how decent the costuming was, or how attractive the actors were in their roles.

It is a shame.... that the film was low budget, and was not able to live up to the potential that I could forsee this story having.
The music hit me first off, verrrry cheesy/low budget, and was often times distracting.
The acting was theatrical and forced on the part of almost EVERY actor, with the exception of the Hero & Heroine (they were fabulous).
I continue to say that it is a shame, because a lovely family story is within, as well as Cinderella-like romance and mystery. The costumes were exquisite, as well as the scenery - but in comparison to other great period films, like ... Read More

Although most agree that this was a gripping storyline and a classic miniseries, there were some people that criticized Rachel Ward. I would like to point out the following:

1) She was extraordinarily beautiful, hard to look away from when she was on-screen. It was plausible that a priest or any other man would be drawn to her. I can't imagine a better-cast Meggie than Rachel Ward.

2) Ward did a remarkable job of portraying convincing love scenes with a gay actor (Richard Chamberlain). I do not know if the cast was aware of his proclivity. If nothing else, Ward's gaydar may have signaled her to the truth of Chamberlain's orientation. Both actors deserve credit for pulling this off.

3) The reality on the set was that Ward had found her "masculine counterpart" in Bryan Brown. They would ... Read More

This is without a doubt my favorite book and movie. Watch the movie at least twice each year and never grow tired of the magnificnet writing. Wanted so much for "Mrs Bone" to love her Attorney, which she did, but not in the way he
would have liked. But also knew her heart was with the rough and tough man
she married and tamed. Seldom have I enjoyed a book so much and then when I first was introduced to the movie, could not believe how heart wrenching and
brave these people were. Need more people like this is the world but afraid our
strength has faltered since WW2.

This is a movie I saw and loved so much that I bought a copy, after telling friends about it, and loaning it the inevitable happend........I never got it back. So I bought another copy and yes, it's that good. When I first started to watch the movie, I thought about a Town Called Alice, and the forced marches the Japenese made POW's do so many times. But this is a story of survival, hope, determation and a lot of joy and sadness along the way. YET, it is not a sad movie and no it's not a "chick flick"will it brings tears? I hope so, you should cry when you see man's inhumanity to man in any way shape or form. But it's not depressing. This is a movie that somehow slipped through the cracks when it should have blazened across the airways. The acting- phenominal from everyone, the story- a true one- Inspriartional- made me want to make my life better. ... Read More

When I ordered this book - no where did it say that this was an abridged copy of the book and that it would be of such poor quality - I have not read it - it is sitting here waiting for me to send it back! I have never experienced this before -
