I am 1/3rd of the way through this book. If you enjoy Austen and the like, as I do, you will enjoy this novel. However, I encourage you to buy a different edition. This edition of the book is riddled with typos. "r" instead of "n", "her" instead of "he", etc. And it's not just occaisionally. Sometimes it's several on a page. It interupts the flow of the story and I'm about ready to chuck this copy and check a different edition out of the library.

This film features Judi Dench and Maggie Smith at their best. This is a touching and sad story of two sisters whose quiet and ordered world is set reeling by the arrival of a young stranger when he is washed up on the beach near their lonely cottage.

During the film we get to meet many of the neighbors and friends in the area, and experience the anxiety which the boy and another newly-arrived girl engender in the inhabitants of this pre-World War II Cornish village.

The setting for the story is beautiful, and the emotional scenes are well balanced by some lively humor. The film ends with some vital questions left unanswered, such as where did the lad come from, why was he washed up, why was he going to the USA, etc. However, despite this, the film is exceptional and ... Joan Plowright held me spellbound from start to finish. The cast is magically interwoven in such way that all become family and create the very best outcome for a story that is alive within society each day, yet seems to be unseen and not acknowledged. Our elders are not supported or respected as well they should be.

Joan tells the story through the greatest piece of acting I have seen for many a year, between herself and her young friend, they wrap the viewer safely within the story, so safely, that understanding about growing older fills one's being. A wonderful movie and ever so true to life.

Joan Plowright is a magnificent actress, brillient!!!

Tea with Mussolini is loosely based on a biography of film maker Franco Zeffrelli. It's the story of several English women, referred to as the Scorpioni who live in Florence, Italy. They are all in love with Italy and happily take advantage of the great art and beauty of Florence. It's home to them!

The ladies have a small close community and a few of them become involved with Luca, who is the illegitimate son of a local man. After his mother dies, he's placed in an orphanage. The ladies are Mary (Joan Plowright), Arabella (Judi Dench) and Hester ( Maggie Smith), and all help to care for the boy in some way. Because Hester is the widow of an English statesman, she tries to dominate the other ladies, but they can usually ignore her snobbish ways. The English ladies are also assisted ... Read More

I love this movie. One of my culinary school instructors recommended it, so I ordered it and within two days it was in my hands. Some people can't keep up with the slow start to the story, but when telling a good story it's not always necessary to jump right to the exciting part. You draw it out. Like cooking, storytelling is a craft that's quickly losing it's place in public eye. Both have been replaced by getting spoon-fed homogenous crap from a can.

At the end of the movie, when the sisters realize that Babette had given all of her money to prepare the meal, I identified with her, I felt a solidarity with her. She did it to feel like a human being again. There's such love. I only hope that someday I might perform like that. I've always looked at cooking as performance-art. ... Read More
