LEFT LUGGAGE, an English speaking Netherlands film, was a tremendous film festival traveler, and is known worldwide under nine very different titles. The U.S. release refers to the luggage that Chaja's Father had buried in Antwerp,Belgium when the Nazi onslaught hit Belgium. The film then symbolically refers to the baggage that is left in the lives of the people who endured and survived the Holocaust and the legacy that is put upon the next generation.I have seen this script done countless times and far more effectively!
1972 Antwerp has Chaja (Scotland's Laura Fraser-Virtual Sexuality)as the daughter of two non-religious Jewish Holocaust survivors. Her Father cannot let go of the past, and her Mother refuses to acknowledge it.Chaja's Jewish identity has never been of any real significance ... Read More

This film is informative but rather superficial. If you know well the hassidic world or search for a deep understanding of his ways and thinking, this will be not enough for you. It gives information and (bless God!!) is sympathetic, but if the mind and professional expertise of the fim makers is there, the soul is not. And the soul, the neshameh, is an important thing in hassidism after all...

Providing funny in-site into a traditional Jewish community, this movie ends in intrigue.

It is unclear who is fathered a long-awaited boy: an orthodox major movie character or a friend of him, a convict-on-run abusing Jewish rules and hospitality.

I read this book because it was on the reading list at George Wythe University. I loved this book because even though I wasn't familiar with baseball or Jewish religions, I could easily follow the plot and enjoy the strong characters, friendship and parenting styles behind the scenes.

Danny and Reuven transformed strong hostility into friendship, which was amazing! How Danny was acting at the baseball game and his seemingly intentional injury on Reuven's eye would have been unpardonable. It wasn't intentional and Danny didn't even know why he wanted to kill Reuven. He gathered his courage and went to apologize to Reuven. It was of course a shock to Reuven, but with his father's kind guidance, Reuven developed listening ears not only to Danny but Danny's father later on.

Danny's father ... Read More

If you own only one classic musical film get this one first. It is a wonderful integration of music into a story. A brilliant translation to the wide screen. And Topol is outstanding in his somewhat underplayed (relatively speaking) performance which allows the rest of the cast their moments of glory. It may not represent the poverty of the Russian shtetl, but it is a warm, ingratiating story of how one man came to accept the modern world. And a little bit of ancestral cultural feeling. And shows why groups often reject change as it tears down the traditions that sustain their human pride in a dizzy political mire that was Eastern Europe for Jewry. Just wonderful technically in its use of the wide canvas of Panavision. Let's look for a blu ray DVD soon...

This film deserves five stars for a few reasons. As long as you take it for what it is -- an engaging story, quite non-Hollywood, made on a small budget -- it provides many pleasant surprises. Two scenes were particularly memorable to me, one involving a marriage proposal and the other a religious divorce ceremony. Each was understated, yet every word and gesture was laden with meaning, in an almost Jane Austen manner.

But what really stood out to me is the way the film defies the usual cliches. This film compares favorably, for example, to The Chosen, which is another film about the interplay of Orthodox and non-Orthodox Jews. In The Chosen, all the good lines and good decisions in the movie lie on the side of modernity. In Hester Street, tradition and Orthodoxy receive their due, and I would ... Read More

Billed as an "arthouse thriller," this looks at what would happen if some Israeli fanatics co-opted a secret Israeli hit squad and tried to blow up a mosque in Jerusalem. I thought that already happened. Still, there are some good moments here, and the mood is sustained well throughout. The dialogue is in Hebrew, but the subtitles are easy to follow. I've never been to Israel. This must be what it's like. I think I'll stay home.
