I bought this DVD because of my addiction to Gilbert & Sullivan, and "Pirates" in particular, but I hesitate to recommend it to someone encountering the opera for the first time (not that there are any other better options on the market, regrettably). It is full of energy and great fun but, as other reviewers have noted, the picture quality is often very poor, and, especially in the choruses, the sound is frequently "muddy". Kevin Kline and the other principals who went on to make the later "Pirates" film are all in good voice here (although I cannot understand why George Rose introduced the irritating nasal whine in "I am an orphan boy" here, which he later repeated in the film - there must be some subtle cultural reference that I am missing). This is a wonderful DVD. I got this as a stop gap until the VHS came out on DVD, but now I may not. Yes, the technical aspects are not the best. But it is the filming of an actual performance at the Delacorte Theater. It's not as slick as the production with Angela Landsbury, but Patricia Routledge, later to be Hetty Wainthrop and Hyacinth Bucket, more than holds her own, and the production has those small details that usually are left out of a much-edited and rehearsed film. You really get the feeling you are there watching a live performance. If you are a G&S fan, this is a DVD you must have. It is a gem of a performance, with wonderful actors/singers.

I'm always leery of "new and improved" productions of the works of Gilbert & Sullivan. The originals are hard to beat. To my amazement, this version of The Mikado is actually very watchable and enjoyable! The producers stayed true, for the most part, to both the original story line and libretti (other than the fact they "moved" the story from Japan to England, and made a few very minor changes to the dialog). The performance of the musical score is outstanding - Sullivan would be proud.

Two great Gilbert & Sullivan productions together on one DVD. This is a great package. Both are well performed, energetic and entertaining. Several of the cast appear in both performances, including Anthony Warlow and David Hobson. Trail By Jury is brought forward to modern times. I am not generally in favour of this treatment of Gilbert & Sullivan, although I understand the need to make them as accessible as possible to new audiences. Fortunately, the transformation did not distract from the great performances on show. Anthony Warlow manages to maintain a Scottish accent even while singing in his most unique portrayal of the Learned Judge, while David Hobson brilliantly captures the arrogant attitude of the defendant, Edwin. Most reviewers seem to think that this is the Piano/Vocal score, from Dover, and that's why I bought this from Amazon. Most reviewers here have used the Dover piano/vocal score before, but they didn't buy it from Amazon. The book they used is NOT THIS BOOK. This book is ONLY THE LIBRETTO. It has DIALOGUE AND LYRICS, nothing else. Do not buy this if you think it is the score. Amazon, PLEASE remove these misleading reviews.

Excellent, recent edition of Gilbert and Sullivan's PIRATES of PENZANCE operetta available now. It is clear and easy to read and shows fine editorial work. I recommend it highly.

This is by far the best version of "Pride and Prejudice". I believe I have seen every one of them and none compares. Laurence Olivier was great of course as Darcy, but Colin Firth has completely captured the character. I doubt that any one will ever be able to portray Darcy better. I am extremely satified that I purchased the 10th Anniversary Collector's Edition even though I all ready had the original DVD of the same produecton. It is definitely well worth the price. I strongly recommend it to every one. The DVDs come in a beautifully designed case, and I thoroughly enjoyed the accompanying behind-the-scenes disc. This Australian production of "The Pirates of Penzance" is totally hilarious. I would only recommend it to those who are not G&S purists. I'm sure that Gilbert would be rolling in his grave if he were to see it. However, I'm always happy to have fun with "camped up" versions of G&S productions as well as those true to the original production. Jon English makes an unforgettable and totally hilarious Pirate King. Simon Gallaher, (Frederick), as well as Helen Donaldson make a beautiful couple. The entire cast and orchestra are outstanding.
