When I first heard this book was published, I was curious as to who was profiled in it. When I saw the listing, I immediately recognized some of the names from when I was a Jewish convert to Catholicism myself (I had become a Catholic as a teenager in 1978 after growing up nonreligious; I returned to Judaism in 1991 after meeting up with a Chasidic rabbi who turned me on to the authentic Judaism I'd never known before.)

It seems that very few Jews are drawn to the Catholic church (hence the book's need to profile some who have been dead for about 100 years, like the Ratisbonne brothers.) Or Zolli, who actually converted for reasons of spite rather than true faith. Speaking of Zolli, to understand the other side of why he converted, see "A Chief Rabbi of Rome Becomes a Catholic" ... Marcus Grodi of the "Coming Home" network has put together this wonderful collection of conversion stories that have appeared over the years in his network newsletter. Included is his own story and that of his wife Marilyn. The stories in this book vary from conversion to Catholicism from Islam and Judaism to conversion from various Protestant denominations to stories of those who left the Church for what they perceived to be greener pasture only to eventually come home. The title of both Grodi's network and book are extremely appropriate because when one makes this journey there is an intense feeling of finally being home.

As is to be expected in any collection of essays such as this one there are going to be chapters that are better than others and there are going to be stories that appeal ... Read More

I devoured this book! I read the whole thing in a day. I plan to buy this book as gifts to friends in the faith and to my Mom who since I joined the church has become more interested in it. It's an inspirational journey of Biblical reasons for becoming Catholic. Nothing is more attractive then the truth. As a Protestant convert to the Catholic Church I found parts of my own journey in each story here. As well as a deepening in my understanding of how to Biblicaly defend many of the Protestant questions I've been asked by friends and family in a more complete way.

If you're read this book and find it's prompted more questions you can call into Catholic Answers radio program and talk to Patrick Madrid or Scott Hahn. :) The fact that your curious is in and of itself a prompting of the Holy Spirit. ... Read More

I chanced upon this book while looking for a forthcoming publication with the same title, this one by Aaron Milavec.

Being a "roamin' catholic" and a student of the history of ideas for more than half a century, I ponder what differance it might have made if early Christianity had recognized and acknowledged the ethnicity of Jesus rather than the divinity of Christ.

Left wondering in awe...

This is a well-written and insightful book about the ministry of Jesus Christ. It is not an easy read in that it is not for entertainment but rather it is a study of a period of time during Jesus' time on earth. I am not a Catholic so I did not have any idea as to the Pope's qualification as a theologian. Obviously, he is very qualified. I am a more informed Christian for having read this book.

When I was in college, I came every close to abandoning my Catholic faith because of Biblical arguments I was hearing from Evangelical friends which seemed very clear-cut and convincing. It was about two years and quite a few books later that I found a great many counter-arguments that were even more convincing. And so I remain a Catholic today - mostly due to Biblical evidence and logical reasoning.
The problem is that too many Catholics today are hearing only one side of the argument - the Evangelical side. Many have no idea that resources like this exist. I bought this book about two years ago, and I still have it on my desk shelf as a quick reference (along with the Bible and William A. Jurgens' "Faith of the Early Fathers").
Dave Armstrong does a wonderful job of making this subject readable and easy to understand. ... Read More

The book plots the story of Alex Jones', a black Pentecostal minister's, conversion to Catholicism. The story is familiar and I agree with his logic: simply, that the Catholic Church is the oldest Church and the true successor to the Church Fathers. Anyone who looks at the facts will find there are no real arguments against this: "To be deep in history is to cease to be Protestant."

My gripe with this book is that Deacon Jones doesn't really prove to a critic's satisfaction why the Apostolic Church Fathers views aren't merely 'interpretation' too, over against the fundamentalist view that they are presenting the pure Bible. He tries but I don't think he fully succeeds or spends enough time pointing out that fundamentalists DON'T read Scripture in a strictly literal and non-interpretative manner.

I used to be a 'Pentecostal'. ... Read More

This is a wonderful book that I would recommend to all non-Roman Catholic Christians. I have bought this for all of my fundamentalist friends (though I don't think any of them have actually read it). Much better than Keating's 'Catholicism and Fundamentalism'

As a Baptist who has been worrying about the future of the Church, I have been toying with the thought that maybe the Catholic church is the right one. Boy, was I ever wrong.
I started reading this book because of the author's background...Baptist... but I soon realized that he is like all the other converts to Catholicism.....very rebellious.
I can forgive him that. But I can't forgive him his unscholarly work.
Something kept bugging me about Romans 3:28 so I went to all my translations of the Bible to see if I could see where "alone" appeared. And good grief, it wasn't there! I can only conclude that Ray must have a very very old copy of Luther's translation. Or maybe he has a copy of the Bible I haven't seen.
But the big issues he left out completely....such as praying to Mary. Yes praying to Mary. Anyone who says that ... Read More
