This book presents ideas from top-down. They show you something and then explain the pieces that they think are important. They are fairly good at this but the problem is they don't explain everything in detail. They tell you just enough about a subject to make you think you understand it but gloss over pitfalls. They keep telling you not to worry about certain parts of the code - they will explain them later. I think learning a language from the bottom up is better. That way one understands all the pieces that are being assembled. This book is getting the job done but I'm often confused about what code (explained in later chapters) is doing. Maybe I should read the book in reverse order...

This is an extremely well written and informative book. I have
lots of experience with servlets, so I don't know how the book
will appeal to page designers, but I had no problem reading and
enjoying the chapters oriented more toward them. I used to look
at JSP and see the same kind of maintenance nightmare that comes
with something like PHP when your project gets large. I have
been using WebMacro/Velocity but am now a convert to JSP since
it has matured. I love the author's philosophy of no scriptlets
in your JSPs. I own many programing books, but I believe this
is the best written I've seen.

If you're looking for the one-stop reference book --- this is it. But like other reference books, this one may sit, unused on your desk gathering dust. It's a painfully dry read guaranteed to put you to sleep at night.

Overall, Spring in Action (SIA) is an excellent book, well worth buying. Here are my impressions after having studied (in a group) several portions of the book a little while ago:

---------
Pros are:
---------
- SIA contains many memorable source code examples that help the concepts stick in one's mind.
- Very much in the tradition of books from Manning publishers, the print quality is pleasing, and the book lays flat nicely for easy reading. In this aspect, it's right up there with the book "Code Craft: The Practice of Writing Excellent Code" by Pete Goodliffe (Publisher: No Starch Press), which, by the way, is another eminently readable, useful book. This is in stark contrast with the book "Eclipse Distilled" by David Carlson (Publisher: Addison-Wesley Professional). ... Read More

I am a programmer, and in a programming language book, I expect to find syntactical diagrams of the language. Anyone can read those, we should not have to glean the diagram from the wordy explanation. It's fine to have all the verbiage, but head each section with the syntax diagram.
Also, this book goes into lengthy explanations of what object oriented programming is NOT, as on page 104. This is a very bad practice in teaching. Only teach what is correct, not what some novice might ignorantly think. I have gotten better fundamentals in Java free on the w3c site.

This is a very good book.
It is a must have for any serious web-application devloper.
It explains well all the subjects you need to know about servlet programming.

Buying this book saves you lot of learning-by-step time.
I really suggest this title.
Finally one book that i'm glad to pay.

This is my forst wrox book but, if all worx books are like this one, for sure not the last.

This book is exactly what I *didn't* need. I have a project due in 2 weeks, I don't know JSP and need to create something Yesterday. This book seems to want to tell me everything I don't want to know upfront and saves anything useful for chapters 16+. Reading the first 10 chapters, I don't know if I can make it through the next 6 in order to get to something helpful. Don't buy this book.

Pretty good book. It is for people with little or no java experience. Found several typos and code errors that I didn't find any documentation for!

P.S. The source code IS available for download at http://support.apress.com/

I used Kathy Sierra's "Sun Certified Programmer & Developer for Java 2 Study Guide" to pass both of those certification exams with flying colors. Although the overly jokey format of that book was more cringe-worthy than engrossing, the book contained solid information and was somewhat easy to review, reference, and study with.

I already have a solid working knowledge of servlets and JSPs, so I wanted to find a book that was geared only for certification. I was very hesitant about purchasing this SCWCD book after seeing that it followed the useless Head First approach to teaching, but hoped that the actual information in the book would outweigh the shortcomings. I read the entire book, and took every practice exam but still came away thoroughly disappointed.

I bought this book after reading a lot of positive reviews... and i'm a little disappointed.

Minuses of this books are:
- language - it's very poor - i guess the author is not a native speaker; the content of the book may be very unclear for people who don't speak english in everyday life (as i do),
- unclear explanations - a lot of easy things are explained in an obscure way. In addition some parts of the book just seem to be incomplete - sometimes you just want to grasp something and you can't because there is lack of information - you turn the page in hope you'll find what you think should be there and... there's entirely new subject there,
- some examples are not printed in the book so if you want to read them you have to turn on you computer - i don't like it.
