Innocence...a child's life, each day a chance to improvise
Storybooks read to the illiterate with pieces revised
Hills to climb trees to climb, dads car to go to the bizarre in
Pomegranates aroma, a true friend to find yourself in
A pledge to eat dirt or not to define who you are or not
Hazara and Suni unaware of their world as children they sing
In the end, the world always wins. That's just the way of things

A larger Afghan world of traditions bent on stature
One up over one down One man determined to rupture
A divergence of advantages mixed upon the disadvantaged
Bound together by a family in secret genetic heritage
Brute upon hero as in David and Goliath
Innocence faces brutality in a Kite Runners undoing

I had no intention of reading this book because of the negative publicity surrounding Khaled Hosseini's previously published novel, The Kite Runner, and the movie based on it. I know some people who will not watch any movie with rape scenes. Unfortunately, I'm not that ideologically consistent, as my favorite director is Sergio Leone, and his films have a lot of rape scenes.

In any event, a local Muslima was leading a book discussion group which was planning to talk about A Thousand Splendid Suns, so I decided to read it and participate.

I should list reviews in major publications.

2. New York Times, by Michiko Kakutani
3. London Times by Joan Smith
4. Washington Post by Johnathan ... Read More

I & my husband both, enjoyed this book -- about how it feels to get old, while giving the inside story of how circus life was in the early 1900's.Great characters, book made me feel like I was there....

This is a tale about a remarkable man - unfortunately it is not very well written. Even tho the action takes place in different towns, it is basically the same story over and over. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in building schools for the poor in Pakistan and also as an aid to sleeplessness.

Lisa See's novel, "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan," takes us into remote 19th-century China, where girls had their feet bound in a ritual of beauty that started at age 6 and took two full years to complete. From foot-binding onward, girls and women lived secluded in a second-story chamber of their household.
At 80, the narrator, Lily, is the senior woman of a wealthy household, powerful enough that she can speak her mind about her life's treasures and errors. Born in 1823 in the Hunan province, Lily started off as "a second worthless girl" in a poor farming family. Because her feet were high in the arch and potentially breathtaking, she had the potential to marry well and elevate the status of her family. She could also enter a second formal match, to another woman, a lifetime best friend called a sworn sister ... Read More

I can't say I had high expectations for this book, but I was looking forward to reading it. Unfortunately I can't count the times I nearly threw it against the wall in despair and almost gave up. I don't give up easily though, and continued to torture myself with finishing this awful book. I read quite a bit, and was sooo disappointed that this book ended up rising to the very top of my 'never recommend/never read again' list.

As some others have said, the characters were so out of well..'character' with their useage of the "f" word and even the "C" word. I was completely put off, and I'm no prude....However, nothing felt loving or romantic about this book AT ALL. I was under the impression that this was a love story that spands time,etc..But I only felt slightly sickened by the two main characters interactions. ... Read More

Ayaan is an awesome woman, and what she has been through (and continues to go through) is positively horrendous. Hearing it in her own voice was special. However, I came away with more fear than ever of Muslims. After her spell wore off a littla, I decided that she might be exaggerating her claim of Muslims' hatred and desire for violent genocide of all "infidels." At least I HOPE she was exaggerating!

9.Prodigal Summer: A Novel by: Barbara Kingsolver

There are 443 reviews of this book as I post review number 444. "Prodigal Summer" is averaging four stars at this point and I'd give it four, too. I'm not a Kingsolver completist; I've only read "Poisonwood Bible" (loved it) and "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle," which was brilliant. With "Prodigal," I'd recommend only to readers who don't mind a bit of biology class along with their plots and characters. The constant detail about mammals and bugs and reptiles and their habitats, rituals, needs and mating was, well, just a bit endless. All the major characters seem to have too much knowledge about nature. I have no problem with nature. It's one of my favorite things. But the information about every bird and goat and snake, layered in thick strands in a fairly rich and interesting plot, grew tiresome.

Here's an example. Deep into ... Read More
