I imagine readers of Stephanie Pearl-McPhee's weblog and books will thoroughly Understand how difficult it is to get just that perfect thing for a beloved fiber artist and have to WAIT to give it to them. So of course, I've peeked ahead, and this is going to be a well-loved daily calendar. You read me right: Daily. Calendar. I don't expect it to have hardcover book quality, or even necessarily keepability, the publisher has placed it righteously in that page-a-day calendar production quality. I really like this book - it proves there can be a lighter side to serious knitting. There is much more to this book than found at first glance. Every time I pick it up I learn something! I immediately made up 4 of the Metered Hanging Towels as a wedding gift. Then I had to make one for ME! There is a wonderful coat in my knitting que on page 23! Encorporating a few tricks, this is a garmet that LOOKS & FITS like what its supposed to be. I'm ready for the enlightenment!! This is not just a book full of patterns. If you are a Knitter who takes their Knitting very seriously, you may not get a kick out of this book. The rest of us enjoy the fact that someone out there is telling it like it is... yes, knitters make mistakes, yes, we sometimes get obsessive, but we're all just trying to get along in a world that looks at people who play with yarn for fun like they're a few skeins short of a sweater. I am truly disappointed in Pearl-McPhee's "Cast Offs". I'm giving it three stars, instead of two or one, only because if you've never read her material before, I think you'd like it more than I did. However, I've read her three other laugh-out-loud books, and this one dims by comparison. I feel her problem is that she starts off welcoming the knitter/reader to "The Land of Knitting", and writes "Cast Offs" from a travelogue point of view. Her attempt to be a witty commentary on knitting while remaining in this style seems forced for much of the book. This book is hilarious! I'm really enjoying it and it's written from a point of view that is easy for new knitters to understand.

I actually purchased this book a while ago and I should have reviewed it sooner--when the hideosity of it was still fresh in my mind. Needless to say, I returned it immediately, even going so far as to site it as "defective" because it was so ugly! So seeing the other reviews I'm confused as to why it is rated so highly... The main problem I had with this book was that the patterns were simple and unimaginative--and not at all flattering. The first book seemed to emphasize flattering a "big girl's" positive body traits but in this book it was like they knitted tents and pulled them over their heads. I am a not-so-happy owner of a first edition of this book. The number of errata is astounding. This book could have been much more useful if the author had not been afraid to "dumb it down" a little. She is trying to teach a technique without taking the time to explain each and every step. If someone's trying to learn something, it's safe to assume that they don't know anything at all about it. So dump a couple of the patterns and add a few more pages of instruction and pictures. I'm going to wait until someone else comes out with another book or DVD explaining this technique before I try again.
