I had no intention of reading this book because of the negative publicity surrounding Khaled Hosseini's previously published novel, The Kite Runner, and the movie based on it. I know some people who will not watch any movie with rape scenes. Unfortunately, I'm not that ideologically consistent, as my favorite director is Sergio Leone, and his films have a lot of rape scenes. In any event, a local Muslima was leading a book discussion group which was planning to talk about A Thousand Splendid Suns, so I decided to read it and participate. I purchased this book knowing from the past that I had difficulty comprehending Shakespeare. This book is about 300 pages long, and on the right side page there is standard english, and on the left the older english (still considered modern, but confusing). I was able to read through the book and actually enjoy what I was reading by simply reading the new english side of the book. Then when I go back for excerpts or pages assigned by a teacher I can look at the English translation along with the original text. It is a little bit of a bad way to learn it, but starting with the original text has put me no where, i simply don't comprehend what I am reading.

I absolutely HATED reading this book. I respect it as a very popular piece of literature, but in truth I spent more time sounding out all of the names in this then actually reading it!
