Imperial Hubris (Why The West Is Losing The War On Terror)
If anyone thinks that the West has a sensible working policy that can beat terrorism with its approach to Afghanistan,Israel and the Gulf States then read this book and see what the terrorists representatives say and have it interpreted by ex-CIA operatives involved during the Russian presence in Afghanistan. These operatives had enormous insight to the tribal tensions and politics, Afghani history and what makes the population tick. All of which was neglected by new kids on the block when the country was invaded by the West. In dealing with Afghanistan the writer also shows the thinking inside the Islamic world that includes that country, Israel and Gulf states as to why terrorists cannot be defeated by the gun.

Let Mr. Scheuer open the door into the world that we find ourselves embroiled in. His insight is invaluable. He has first hand knowledge of what he is talking about and tries to give us his version of the answers to the questions we as citizens should have. You might not like or agree with everything that he says but you should listen and at least roll it around in your head. I look forward to many more books from this author.

I once asked a professor what he thought about DeLillo's book Falling Man, and his response was that, "It just isn't what America needs right now."

At the time, I remember being exasperated by such a political response from a professor of liberal arts, but after reading this book, I can see what he meant. The Looming Tower is what America needs right now.

What struck me first when I opened it was how quickly I was able to read through it. Non-fiction books are often daunting, boring, heavy-handed, or badly written, but this book is proof that those don't have to be flaws of the genre.

Take a look in the back of the book at the number of books Wright went through in research, and how many people he interviewed, and you'll get a feel for why this book feels so real. ... Read More

Very well written and keeps your attention. Very detailed and fact based. The author is as unbiased as they come. I came into this book embarassingly ignorant about international politics, especially the events leading up to September 11, 2001. I feel thankful toward the author for putting together such complex information in a straight forward, but captivating way - a way that lets even the most unaware reader begin to understand the whirlwind of money, politics, fanaticism, and international counter-interests that intersect to create the horrors of tomorrow. I was amazed at how much the US government played a hand in fostering Taliban and al Qaeda. A hand full of tunnel vissioned, post cold-war mongering CIA agents and senators operating with a unconscionable amount power financed, encouraged, and then ... Read More

2004's "Understanding Terror Networks" is a detailed look at al-Qaeda and its associated networks, the new Mujahedin of radical Islam. Author Marc Sageman is a Doctor of Psychiatry and Sociology, with intelligence and foreign service experience in the effort to expel the Soviets from Afghanistan in the 1980's. Using open source data, he examines a large sampling of information on individual terrorists to determine what makes them tick and how they network. The end result is far more useful than the anecdote-based journalism that fills bookstores.

Sageman documents that the typical Islamic terrorist is a young man from a loving middle class family, often well-educated, who becomes alienated through work or study in a foreign country or even a large city in the Middle East. He reaches out to fellow Muslims, ... Read More

: Blowback: The Costs and Consequences of American Empire
In the Introduction to the book Mr. Johnson tells the reader the circumstances of when the term "Blowback" first appeared in a government document related to covert C.I.A. actions of 1953.

The author shares his critical view of the American empire and uses the U.S. military bases in Japan and Okinawa as examples.
He also examines the joint exercises that various U.S. military organizations perform with some nations known for brutal human rights violations.
On accountability he made this observation, "The Pentagon's most recent route around accountability is 'privatization' of it's training activities."

Another aspect of American imperialism is the actions of the International Monetary Fund that often leads to political instability.
On financing he discusses the enormous sums of money in the U.S defense ... Read More

I am 20 years old, and first stumbled upon Ron Paul back when he originally declared his intent to run for President. I'd heard his name before, and immediately began seeing "Who is Ron Paul?" chalked all around campus. I always considered myself "conservative," but am attending school at a former East-coast hotbed for left wing radicalism (and where more than 85% of the people voted for Obama a couple weeks ago).

Curious, I looked him up, and was intrigued, but read some things about how "radical" he was and kind of dismissed it back then. Return to a gold standard? Seemed so crazy at the time...

Then the Bear Stearns bail out came along. Followed by AIG, and then the big whammy. I couldn't come to grips with this - everyone couldn't stop talking about how these institutions were "too big to fail," yet they were ... Read More
