This book takes the unique perspective of kids who are dealing with mental illness. It is comforting to read the stories of these children.

However, as a parent newly coping with Bipolar disorder in my home, it was frustrating to have just the cause and affect of the disorder discussed. There is nothing out there for parents. I was hoping for guidance on how to cope myself, how to handle discipline, how to help my other children through the rages and how to keep my relationships with my bipolar child intact. This book provided none of these things.

This book is a must for understanding why your bipolar child does some of the things they do. We are raising our Grand daughter who is bipolar and it has given me far more information than anything I had read. It gets easier to be more patient and understanding when you realize that the child is not just being defiant and hard to get along with.
Some parts get a little technical, but if you are dealing with a child with this illness you will certainly get your money's worth.

This book is a well-written and interesting first person account of the coming of age of a teenager with bipolar disorder. It is the best book I've seen that describes what what mania and depression feels like. It discusses all the pertinent topics, drugs, depression, mania, suicidal feelings and hospitalization, including why one would be hospitalized and what it is like being in hospital. The author talks about all these things as he has experienced them, which is the chief strength of the book. I would recommend this book for anyone who is bipolar and for the family and friends of people who are bipolar. It is very well done.

I have been parenting bipolar children for 25 years. My youngest is now 5. I wish this book had been available when I was raising my oldest. There are many good books on BP in children (and I have most of them), but if I could only have one, this would be the one. The section on the importance of sleep habits was worth the price of the book all by itself.

Mental Illness is something that every single person has to deal it, be it directly or indirectly. It scares me to see just how many people suffer from mental illness and I often wonder - do we have more mental illness in this generation? Or is it because it went undiagnosed in previous generations? No matter, we are now, as a society, dealing with this disease and all its various forms.

What amazes me is the stigma that STILL seems to be attached today. Why is that? Is certainly a question that author Kate McLaughlin has asked and, no doubt, keeps asking herself.

Kate McLaughlin certainly knows first hand the joys and pains of living with this disease. Two of her children suffer from mental illness and this has had to redefine the life that this family lives and ... Read More

I gave this book as a gift to a good friend with bipolar disorder. Her comment to me was "I wish I had this when I was first diagnosed (about 15 years ago)!" She has passed it along to another family whose son was recently diagnosed. Says this is an excellent and easy-to-understand resource for families and was most grateful for the gift.

This is a GREAT book. My eight year old son has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, so I own many books on the subject. "What Works for Bipolar Kids" is now one of my two favorites. Dr. Pavuluri discusses many different subjects, including medications, which is very helpful. I wish I lived in Chicago so that maybe my son would have the privelege of being one of her patients. Lots of wisdom, knowledge, and compassion were used in the writing of this book!

I am not the parent of a child with bipolar disorder, so I cannot comment on how useful this book is for parents trying to help a bipolar child. However, as a general reader, I found this book to have good basic information. It was easy to read, not at all too technical for the non medically trained person. In fact, I thought that at times the author could have gone into more detail on particular topics.

I would recommend this book to anyone looking for easy to read, entry-level info on pediatric bipolar disorder.

I was overwhelmed with the books available on bipolar disorder. This book, however, is easy to read and offers helpful information and strategies for coping with the symptoms of several mental health disorders. I highly recommend this book for counselors and parents of children with related disorders.
