I got interested in this book when I saw Scott McClellan on "Meet the Press" one morning. It was either Tim Russert's last or next-to-last show before he died suddenly.

I didn't know what to expect from Mr. McClellan, so I watched. I was amazed to see a guy that seemed to be expressing genuine regret to the American people for letting them down. It wasn't exactly his fault, but he does seem to blame himself to some degree. Anyway, I was intrigued by his sincerity--and not only that, but his apparent forthrightness and honesty.

So when I saw the book at the library, I picked it up, and got very interested after just a few pages--you know, the way you do when you read a thriller-type novel. I enjoyed the book for the following reasons:

-It's well written. ... Read More

Someone wise once said: to those who understand no explanation is necessary; to those who do not, none is possible. Citing "human rights," Meyer and her minions agonize over such practices as waterboarding, sleep deprivation and such. This reveals that she knows nothing about torture as it has been practised our enemies over millenia. The irony of this is that the very people who denounce these interrogative techinques are the same ones who turn a blind eye to the inhuman, agonizingly painful destruction on helpless infants in the cause of "privacy" and "the right to choose." How can any sensible person take the likes of the irrational Bush haters such as Mayer seriously? The book reveals nothing that has not been in the news. Did Mayer complain about Clinton administration policy that Muslim ... Read More

No need to cover points already made by others. There's one underlying assumption of the book I want to take issue with. Repeatedly, author Suskind alludes to America's lost moral authority, which he sees as a principal casualty of the Bush administration's cynical war on terrorism. Now, I'm wondering just where that lost moral authority resides or has resided. Seems to me that an unbiased reading of the country's history provides little evidence of any repository of moral authority that could be lost. From genocide of the Native Americans to ruthless territorial expansion to WWII fire bombings, plus the many recent bloody imperial adventures, the list of major crimes is a long one. In short, looks to me like we've acted pretty much like any other expansionist state since our founding. By what actions, ... Read More

4.The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism by: Naomi Klein

: The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism
Klein caters to her socialist audience with this work of astonishingly blatant distortions and falsehoods, knowing that it will sell to the true believers and that she'll get away with it. But don't look here for real scholarship. Her straw-man case against Friedman and free-markets it so blatantly distorted and fabricated that any gems of truth are lost in the mire.

Read the other one-star reviews for some details, and for a more thorough analysis read Johan Norberg's review in the October 2008 issue of Reason magazine, which shows how thoroughly Klein actually gets Friedman's position, and many facts about economics, exactly backward across the board. To accomplish that requires more than error, it indicates a deliberate attempt to deceive.

Bob Woodward has provided another candid, incisive, and informative window into the personalities, key players, and power brokers who have helped shape and implement the Bush administration's policy in Iraq. He provides detailed accounts of candid, sometimes back room discussions among the key figures who have shaped American military policy in Iraq in the waning years of the Bush administration. This includes figures such as Bush's key advisor Stephen Hadley, Peter Pace, Stephen Petraeus as well as the obvious Bush officials Condi Rice and Dick Cheney.

Woodward's portrait is well-balanced and highlights both shortcomings, such as internal debates about Iraq policy (or lack thereof) among his senior aides; to the apparent success of measures like "the surge" and "Anbar Awakening." He then ... Read More

I bought this book because of several reviews. I was given the impression that it was an honest and objective book on the times, I was greatly disappointed. This is someone from a very large family or there's only a handful of people writing reviews under many different names, most of which are just plain bunk. In any case the book is anything but objective. But I did find the proper place for it, the city dump!

You remember Hillary Clinton talking about the vast right wing conspiracy back in the late 90's? Well in The Wrecking Crew Thomas Frank chronicles the entire 30 year, systematic and sordid affair, including all the details, names, dates, and theme songs such as "DE-FUND THE LEFT."

If you ever wondered who's systematically undermining (yes it's still going on) our government of, by, and for the people, this book clarifies things better than any book I've ever read. If you really want to know what the next President is up against, you can't afford to miss this book.

I could not set this book down. Three things made it special:

1) The biography and credentials of the author: a West Point grad; retired Army Colonel; Boston College professor; and father of an Army Lieutenant recently killed in Iraq.
2) The writing, which is compact and lively. No point is made without many facts and examples, but no point is flogged to death.
3) The author's underlying ambivalence about America's culture, politics, history, ideology. He does not hate America but struggles to understand it. He weaves observations about America's foundational values into powerful conclusions about the state of our country.

The anti-Bush crowd loves this book, but it is much more than a rant against the current administration. It gave me plenty to think about.

I am 20 years old, and first stumbled upon Ron Paul back when he originally declared his intent to run for President. I'd heard his name before, and immediately began seeing "Who is Ron Paul?" chalked all around campus. I always considered myself "conservative," but am attending school at a former East-coast hotbed for left wing radicalism (and where more than 85% of the people voted for Obama a couple weeks ago).

Curious, I looked him up, and was intrigued, but read some things about how "radical" he was and kind of dismissed it back then. Return to a gold standard? Seemed so crazy at the time...

Then the Bear Stearns bail out came along. Followed by AIG, and then the big whammy. I couldn't come to grips with this - everyone couldn't stop talking about how these institutions were "too big ... Read More

I grew up with the movie JFK and like many fell for its conspiracy theories but after reading this book I cannot imagine why anyone would even hesitate to believe Oswald didnt do it by himself. The evidence presented in this meticulously researched and beautifully crafted book is completely compelling. It literally takes many events and breaks them down minute by minute, covering that tragic day and the three days following.
The most shocking part, of course, is the shooting of President Kennedy and I felt like I was there, watching it all happen, so immersed in it that I felt I could stop it somehow. Any book that can involve the reader to that degree deserves the highest praise.
