"I Was Told There'd Be Cake" is a collection of essays by Sloane Crosley. She touches on every subject from childhood obsessions with Oregon Trail to the horrendous experience of moving in Manhattan and just about everything (including the kitchen sink).
She can take the simplest of experiences and turn them into an experience that will leave you rolling on the ground, laughing until you cry. She discusses topics that most people are hesitant to confront and turns it into a situation you can laugh about. Her voice is sarcastic enough to make you chuckle but not sardonic enough to be considered cruel. Most importantly, she writes about things we can relate to.
As you read, you find yourself agreeing with the things Sloane says. We've all had some experiences similar ... Read More

I think this is a great autobiography. You get an insider's look to what Tori's life was like growing up, during 90210 and her current marriage. I have always loved Tori and reading this made me feel for her the way all the critics who say mean things should.

Laugh at yourself and the whole world laughs with you. It's hard to write humorous essays that stand the test of time. Will Rogers realized that and just read the newspaper to audiences while adding an occasionally wry quip to get huge laughs. Put those messages into a book, and they wouldn't have lasted.

I haven't heard David Sedaris perform in person (which he does as readings), but I'm told he's marvelous. If you have had that pleasure, you will undoubtedly hear his voice, know his timing, and see his expressions as you read this witty, self-deprecating book. I suspect that such an imagined performance would easily turn this into a five-star book.

Proust waxed poetic about his memories of a madeleine (a shell-shaped cake in the France of his youth) in stream of consciousness ... Read More

I enjoyed this book. I happened to just pick it up because it was on a table. Since reading the book I have become an avid reader of her blog and just ordered her other two books. She is like the friend you meet up with every so often to catch up and get the load down of their weird and bizarre life, you laugh so hard at their stories because you just can't believe that actually happens to someone.

This was a fun read and I would suggest it to everyone!

I can always count on an Emily Giffin book to not only be a great read but to also make me think. She writes amazing, imperfect characters that seem utterly real, who act like people do in real life and always express emotions that I can believe. I really enjoyed reading about Ellen, Leo, Andy, Suzanne, Margot and the gang as they deal with a single relationship in the past that threatens all of them. I loved watch their family fall apart, then rally together as Ellen is forced to make the choice of her life. Great drama and another fun, intelligent book from Giffin. Can't wait until the next one!

Hitler was somebody's father. Not actually true, but he could have been. Stalin was somebody's father, how's that? A Wolf at the Table explores Burroughs relationship with his father, continuing to flesh out the story from his earlier memoir. The story is brutally honest, or at least it seems so. A son who desperately wants his father's love and never truly understands that his father was never worthy of the effort. Do you have to love your father just because he's your father?

One suspects once again that Burroughs, who changed his name to sounded more "literary," is engaging in great liberties with the truth. So what? I never understood why he was so defensive about Running With Scissors (which, due to a lawsuit, had the word "memoir" stripped from it). The memoir form is supposed to represent ... Read More

I truly looked forward to this, having thoroughly enjoyed The Devil Wears Prada. This was incredibly weak. I think that it had the makings of a decent story, but every single story line needed to be fleshed out, and all of the parts that were skipped from chapter to chapter should have been included. She must have been under pressure to finish it, because this could not hold a candle to her previous work.

I hate it that the footnotes don't show up in the Kindle edition. I kind of feel like I got half a book with them being left out!
