A beginners guide to multi-threading on WIN32. Experienced developers might find it useful to quickly skim through this book to see if there is anything that they didn't already know, but for the most part anyone with significant experience should find a different book.

The language used in the book is very easy to read, making life easy for newcomers to threading, but possibly woolly enough to be slightly dangerous too, in that some stuff could bits could be misinterpreted. Developing example code using incorrect practices and then slowly fixing the problems is informative, but possibly not the best way of doing things. Why not just go for the right way first and then point out the errors that could have been made? That way it is safe for people to dip into the book and use code ... Read More

: Roughneck Nine-One: The Extraordinary Story of a Special Forces A-team at War
This book isnt bad, but its not great either. The first third of the book is the author telling you how great his team is and how they built it up from nothing. Though lacking in modesty of any kind the story plods along at a slow but steady pace.

When the book ( finally ) gets to the combat sections, those are more intersting but still a little preachy. Overall it would recommend other books written by soldiers returning from combat over this one. LONE SURVIVOR is excellent.

: Odd Girl Out: The Hidden Culture of Aggression in Girls
Rachel Simmons shines the light on girl aggression/bullying and it can no longer slip under the radar in our schools. When and how are we doing to stop girl bullying in our schools? Simmons writes about her own familiarity with bullying. She also includes a variety of stories from different girls/women's experiences with bullying. There is no pretty pink coating to go over the reality of what is happening in our schools and from what I have come to understand, will continue at an intensified level in the future.

I saw myself in several of the different side stories included in the book. It would probably be hard for any woman to read this book and not relate to at least five or six of the small stories held within. This book would be a great read aloud for a group of older girls ... Read More

: On Writing Well, 30th Anniversary Edition: The Classic Guide to Writing Nonfiction (On Writing Well)
I love that Zinsser includes a draft with his edits on it. He advocates the sparcity of writing. Remove all excess words. Clean, crisp, clear. Prune ruthlessly.
He does not romanticise writing, but enables you to just get on with it, and then severely edit to remove all extraneous material (like the latter phrase!)

Some key points I enjoyed:
- "If your job is to write every day, you learn to do it like any other job."

- The reader has an attention span of 30 seconds. Don't make them word too hard. What do you want to say? Have you said it?

- Be yourself. Relax and have confidence. Find the interesting and describe it. Leave out the mundane. Be curious. The truth is interesting. Write what you care about.

- "You learn to write by writing. Force ... Read More

If you want to do any serious development in Window, this is the book to get. Once you read and understand the basic C++ books, and want to get beyond simple applications, you need this book. This is not a beginner text, but a grown-up book on what is happening inside windows and how to use it in your application. I found this book invaluable in building multithreading, port i/o, virtual array management in my application. The author really knows his stuff and presents it in a very readable fashion. The source code for the examples in this book are well-commented and I have found it easy to take code fragments from then to use in my applications.

This book is a keeper.

8.JavaScript Definitive Guide by: David Flanagan

 : JavaScript Definitive Guide
This is I believe the best book about basic Javascript on the market right now.

Pros: Technically complete, solid writing style, understandable examples, no better intro books on the market.

Cons: Authors repeatedly show that they prefer class-based object systems, which Javascript is not. Authors do not effectively teach advanced Javascript prototype-based object usage and in fact seem to view it as a nuisance to be avoided. Authors don't regularly use closures except in section on closures.

I would recommend following this book up with "Javascript: The Good Parts" and making sure you fully grok how to use closures to avoid namespace pollution.

: Cosmos and Psyche: Intimations of a New World View

Tarnas has an impressive knowledge of history, but seems to have forgotten that science does not mean fitting data into a pre-determined paradigm. Quite the reverse. His attempt to "prove" astrological influence on history reminds me of the "save the appearances" credo of his predecessors.

The works of Copernicus, de Brahe, Keppler, Newton, et al., that contributed to our understanding of the universe were based on hard science--mathematics and detailed observation, arrived at after leaving aside the idiosyncratic views of each observer.

While Tarnas may have some interesting things to say about psychological archetypes, it is not new; though a close look at the subjective, or way we construct our worldview, is always valuable. His book may have some value in that domain.

 : Nights in Rodanthe
Nicholas Sparks' NIGHTS IN RODANTHE receives JoBeth Williams' fine narrative style as it provides a novel of heartache and new love. After her husband abandons her for a younger woman, Adrienne flees to the small coastal town of Rodanthe in North Carolina to tend a friend's inn there to find a major storm and a mid-aged man change her life. Their weekend together will make a big difference in this warm romance of love between very different people. An outstanding audio acquisition.
