Lisa See's novel, "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan," takes us into remote 19th-century China, where girls had their feet bound in a ritual of beauty that started at age 6 and took two full years to complete. From foot-binding onward, girls and women lived secluded in a second-story chamber of their household.
At 80, the narrator, Lily, is the senior woman of a wealthy household, powerful enough that she can speak her mind about her life's treasures and errors. Born in 1823 in the Hunan province, Lily started off as "a second worthless girl" in a poor farming family. Because her feet were high in the arch and potentially breathtaking, she had the potential to marry well and elevate the status of her family. She could also enter a second formal match, to another woman, a lifetime best friend ... Read More

This tear jerking tale was one that brought tears to my eyes. The fact that the tale is true is just as amazing as Janette Walls herself. Many people go through times in their lives where they need courage, and if they are lucky they find it. Janette Walls had a childhood and adult life that have both called for an abundance of courage. Infact it seams that was the one constant in her life, she is a person of amazing strength in both living her life and telling this humbeling story. I will keep this book forever and read it many times!!!

I had heard such great things about this book, so was really looking forward to reading it. I read to chapter 22, then quit. I thought it was extremely boring and very slow moving. I agree with some of the other reviewers that the author's situation and the subsequent discovery of her manuscript was so intriguing, I expected the book to be the same, but I was very disappointed.

If I were to attempt a plot summary here, my guess is that many readers would be (not unjustifiably) put off by what seems to be a sensationalist, V.C. Andrews-ish, melodramatic series of coincidences, assumed identities, secret twins, incest, ghosts, and murder. I don't know if there's any way that a mere summary can do this book justice. Diane Setterfield's genius is that when you're reading "The Thirteenth Tale," you become so wholly engrossed with the characters and the stories they tell that improbable events - which would make you laugh scornfully in the hands of any other author - instead seem to make perfect sense. Each new lurid detail only pulls you deeper into the story, eliciting very real sympathy for the characters living out this tragedy.

The framing device is rather straightforward ... Read More

Well written, interesting, and easy to read. The story is even good, its just that it never had any real climax to it. Sort of like an old western that kept promising something exciting but it never panned out.

For those of us familiar with horses we know they can be both a dangerous and healing animal, all rolled up in one package. This book shows us how the main character's life is wrapped in many horses and how she is both harmed (emotionally and physically) then heals from the horses around her later in her life. In a sense we have probably all been there with a horse.

some of the things I liked were also some of the things that bothered me. Edwards is a descriptive writer; if you like that kind of writing, you will like her style. However, you still may not like the book. I like her writing, but it works better in short stories or shorter novels.

I liked how Nora began to grow career-wise throughout the novel, but thought her character could have been fleshed out more. I did not find her a sympathetic character, particular as the novel wore on, and I think it would have been better if she had been.

Also, I thought the plot unfolded a little too neatly in some aspects. To be sure, the characters had difficult lives, but sometimes things did not ring true. For example, Caroline didn't struggle as I thought she would have: Doro, her gift, just not very realistic. ... Read More

There was a point in this book when I had to decide if I wanted to continue. Only one other book in the last couple of years made me think that: A Wolf at the Table. That one so brutalized me as a reader that I never picked it back up. One Thousand White Women isn't nearly as harsh--or as well written. Still, it's clear where the book is headed, and I had to decide if I wanted to be sad while I read the last third of the book. I did finish, and I'm glad I did. Glad, but not surprised.

This story of May Dodd and her life with a band of Cheyenne Indians in 1875 is interesting and diverting. It's an intriguing idea: Women traded for horses, and then the "brides" contracted to be brood mares for the tribe. I enjoyed reading how Native Americans lived then, and all the little details of tribal life. Still, the idea for this ... Read More

I loved Snowflower and the Secret Fan so couldn't wait to read this book. What I found was a ridiculous mishmash of ghosts, the afterlife, superstition and illogic. Peony and Ren fall madly and eternally in love after spending minutes together over three nights. We are treated to tales of superstition and rigid Chinese customs that seem to lack any humanity or basic kindness most of the time. In places the machinations of these ghosts become laughable. I was relieved to finish.

Garcia Marquez can write. No doubt about it. The man is a marvel. I'd be puddling along, reading of Fermina Daza, and her adolescent passion (and his for her) of Florentino Ariza, or of her married life with Juvenal Urbino when I'd be swept away by a phrase or image, or the smell of bitter almonds. REmarkable. Poignant. Humorus. Heartbreaking. So much like life. The unfolding of love after youth has faded to no more than a whisper was an unexpected gift -- we can't all be in our twenties forever, no matter what our inner clock thinks.

It was inevitable: the scent of bitter almonds always reminded him of the fate of unrequited love.
