Although I like the previous issue better than this one, Motherland has it's own perks as the story starts to wrap up for our protagonists. Things get a little strange when one of the characters becomes fatally injured, and Yorick almost REALLY dies this time though not of his own occord. I still have no complaints about this series, there's a damn good fight scene, a couple questions finally get answered, and Yorick is still one of the coolest protagonists in graphic novels.

The best way to relay my surprise and ultimate devotion to this particular work is to describe my initial reaction to a summary by a friend who'd read it. She said, "It's about the world after all the men but one dies." I thought to myself, well, it certainly will be a more peaceful world. Brian Vaughn makes an incredibly valid arguement to the contrary and I had to reflect on myself and how I would handle a world where 90% of pilots, truck drivers and other male-dominated professions were simply wiped out and resources were scarce - let alone the inner demons we would have to face and conquer. This is a magnificient work, remarkable in its scope and depth of understanding of human nature. I highly recommend it.

This one is probably my least favorite from the series so far. That said, I still give it four stars because I still enjoyed it as part of the overall series. I think what was lacking for me was Yorick. He did not have as much of a direct presence in this volume. I missed his whimsical, rather cerebral humor.

This one is sort of all over the place too. Lots of little snapshots of back-stories and events leading up to the plague.

Ah, yes, the sexist military policies of the past centuries have placed the world in a precarious position now that 2+ years of passed since the plague that wiped out 99.99% of the male population. We saw this earlier in some of the previous books but in this collected set of 5 of the series comics we see in on the oceans as Yorick, 355, and Dr. Mann take what they think is a cruise ship to Japan in the hopes of finding Ampersand. They never make it there as the ship they are on is attacked by the Australians out of what they claim is self-defense. Don't get too excite by the cover or the title -- yest there is some lesbian content but as we keep learning, Yorick had an extra helping of sexual conservatism than we might expect from a well-educated family and he reacts poorly when 355 and Dr. Mann ... The Good Prince--a more appropriate title for a book has never existed. Fables is, far and away, the best comic book series running at the moment. The Good Prince comprises issues 60-69 of the title, and having read the entire run thus far, I can attest that Fables just keeps getting better and better.

In The Good Prince, Flycatcher takes hold of his lineage and accepts his true name of Prince Ambrose once more. While Fabletown and the Homelands continue to plan and engage war with one another, Prince Ambrose offers a third refuge, one without violence or political espionage.

Prince Ambrose is given the armor of the Foresworn Knight who turns out to be a rather famous figure from our favorite legend. He then uses that armor, as well as a certain well-known sword, to travel ... Read More

In eight individual comics of a series a lot can happen and a lot does happen to Yorick, 355, and Dr. Mann. First Yorick has an adventure of his own in a Catholic Church then as a mascot for a basketball game and finally a break through in Dr. Mann's lab as she discovers a reason for his and Ampersand's survival. In between we learn about what happened and is happening in the lives of two more women important to Yorick: His girlfriend, Beth, in Australia, and his sister, Hero, battling the Amazon brainwashing. But all the positives seem to fly out the door as another secret group destroys a sacred artifact that they believe led to the plague and a ninja, yup, a ninja, steals Ampersand.

For a year and a half, Yorick, 355, and Dr. Mann have been traveling to find a lab where they hope to figure out why Yorick and his pet monkey Ampersand are the only males left alive. Everyone is feeling down but that's dangerous for the last male. In need of antibiotics but fearful of Yorick need to jump into dangerous situations, they leave him with a former ally of 355, 711 who is far more than a simple covert operative. The second story in this book looks at a nutty states' rights group in Arizona which survives and thrives but also threatens the flow of necessary goods between west and east. Not every woman Yorick meets wants in his pants, some just want to kill him and some just want to kick make and have a beer. Sadly the middle group seems the most numerous as the "Sons of Arizona" prove again.

I kept wondering why Yoricks mother would betray him, she must have know that if the Israelis got him she would never see him again. And why would the Israelis try to kill the astronauts, it almost felt Anti-Semitic it was so irrational. Very weak plot in this story arch.

The second part of the of the book is much better though. It pokes fun at prevous issues and the characters are great. I almost wish we could forget about Yorick and focus on the troup of actors from now on.

The first book in Brian K. Vaughan's Y: THE LAST MAN set up the premise: all the males in the world of every species have died except for loser named Yorick Brown and his pet monkey Ampersand. In the chaos that follows American society is oppressed by totalitarian Amazons, who are marked ideologically by an intense detestation of all things male (in later books they will even try to tear down structures they imagine are male) and by their ill-informed attempt to mimic Amazons by cutting off one breast (actually, there is no good evidence that the mythical Amazons removed a breast so as to be better archers, and I've been told by women who are actually good with a bow that there is no physiological reason to need to do so).

In this book Yorick, Ampersand, the mysterious Agent 355, and Dr. Mann begin their continent ... Read More

Apocalyptic stories and gender politics, two of my favor things to read or watch. "Y: The Last Man -- Unmanned" was intense and gripping. I devoured it and wanted more. I'd heard about this graphic serial for years and am so glad I finally got a copy. I'm not sure I buy the decay of the world quite so much, women are very capable and are in most of the jobs required just not in the majority of many of them, but given this is an apocalyptic fantasy/science fiction story, I can go with the flow to see how things play out.
