Title notwithstanding, this series from Alexander McCall Smith doesn't make its living in the detective genre. Precious Ramotswe does indeed run the only ladies' detective agency in Botswana, but her investigations are incidental to the easy-going interactions of her daily life.

We find Mma Ramotswe musing over letters to a newspaper agony aunt and considering how wrongdoings affect those around us. Oh yes, she does investigate, armed with common sense and a copy of Clive Anderson's "Principles of Private Detection" and assisted by Grace Makutsi, star graduate of the Botswana Secretarial College. The ladies investigate blackmail, medical fraud, and a vague "something wrong" at a game preserve. The resolution of these cases further highlights the human foibles of greed and ... Read More

These books by McCall Smith are those that I read when the world gets me down. I love Mme Ramotswe, her ability to find the good in people and positive in situations. She loves her country (Botswana), her husband, and her children. As a "traditional" woman, she is unfettered by her bulk, enjoying the bright patterns of her native land. Although the plots are often skimpy, the people are delightful, and I love reading about an African nation that has a democratic government and healthy children.

Sixth book in the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series.

Mma Ramotswe is dismayed to see the erosion of the traditional values of Botswana as modern life becomes more and more about material possessions. She does her best to set a good example, but falls short from time to time. Now married to Mr. J.L.B. Matekone, Mma Ramotswe continues to run the detective agency while many issues in her personal life cause her worry. A strange man breaks into her house, someone leaves her a pumpkin, her van is stolen, and her mean ex-husband returns to Gabarone, bent on blackmail. Soon after Charlie the apprentice storms out of the garage, Mma Ramotswe literally runs right into a solution to the sudden labor shortage. While following Charlie, she almost hits a man with her tiny white van. Enter the marvelous Mr. Polopetsi. ... Read More

Book five in The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series.

Mma Potokwani ropes Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni into agreeing to do a parachute jump in order to raise money for the orphan farm. In one of my favorite quotes from the book, she says, "We are much cleverer than you men, but, unfortunately, you do not know that." Ha!

Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni is so preoccupied with trying to find a way to avoid keeping his promise that he can't spare a minute to think about getting married, much to Mma Ramotswe's chagrin.

Mma Ramotswe helps a woman who owns a chain of hair salons to investigate several prospective husbands. As always, things work out just fine in the end.

I was excited to read the next book in Isabel's series, and was far from disappointed. It was everything that previous books have led me to expect, and was a very pleasurable and quick read. I only wish it had picked up earlier in the story - it would have been interesting to hear more about Isabel's pregnancy and Charlie's birth. I did find it interesting that Smith decided to not have Isabel breastfeed, which I think was mainly to free her up for her normal activities - after all, having to be home so often to nurse the baby would prevent the housekeeper from being able to look after him - unless she pumped or something - and that just seems like more complicated details for the storyline. (I am nursing right now, and so I am a little more aware of all those details than I might otherwise be.)

But all in all, ... Read More

I adore these books. Because I love giraffes, a friend gave me Tears of the Giraffe as a gift. Thus I discovered the series, and have read every installment. The pace is so relaxing without dragging that they are perfect beach/mountain/vacation reads, or an afternoon treat on a rainy day. Love the books, Alexander!

My favourite of the Isabel Dalhousie series, so far! What a treat! Just the right mix of thinking and relaxing prose. I love the warmth and goodness and common sense that emmanate from McCall Smith's prose. It just feels so good, so cozy. These are books to keep us good company, anytime, anywhere, and to remind us that life is good and we can make it good, too.

This was the first book in this series that I have read. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The plot is exciting but relaxing to enjoy, and there are so many subplots that make it truly fun. The gentle, eye-opening descriptions of a truer Africa were fascinating to me. I heartily recommend this book!

OK... So now I'm up-to-date with all the 44 Scotland Street novels since I completed Love Over Scotland last night. Alexander McCall Smith weaves together the lives of the occupants at 44 Scotland Street with all their charm and quirkiness. The best part is I'm already on hold at the library for the next installment due out in the next month. :)

When we last left the residents of 44 Scotland Street, things were not well in terms of them all keeping in touch. Bruce was leaving for London, Domenica was leaving to study pirates, and Pat was moving out since Bruce was selling the flat. Here we continue on with the life and times of the crew. Bruce is completely missing in action here. Unless he makes a reappearance in the next installment, his character is gone. Bertie is still being smothered by Mummy and analyzed by the therapist (who Bertie ... Read More
