1.Imperial Grunts: The American Military on the Ground by: Robert D. Kaplan

: Imperial Grunts: The American Military on the Ground
A central thesis of Kaplan's book is that the U.S. is now an empire with global reach. I just don't agree with his premise. If we are an empire, we're pretty bad at it. What is true is that the U.S. military has succumbed to "mission creep" with little or no public debate. Why are we training troops in places like Chad or Algeria ? Kaplan is fulsome in his praise of the ground-level troopers, and they deserve it for their dedication and resourcefulness. But it must be admitted that these qualities are often put to use in the service of missions of dubious strategic value.

I can't really give you a review of the book I purchased because I never read it. My youngest son (actually my baby, only in his late 40's)has a birthday in October. Its hard to buy something for someone who lives half way across the country from you. It seems to get harder each year. I know he reads a lot, but so do I. However I like to pick out my own books and figured he would feel the same way. I know we do not read the same type of books so except for sending him gift cards I have never sent him a book. This year though, I came out and said "what Would you like for your birthday? He immediately answered "The Day of Battle: the war in Sicily and Italy, 1943- 1944 (The Liberation Trilogy)" He was currently reading the first book and really liked it and even told me where to find it on ... Should one, for whatever reason, care even a smidgen about Israel and its future, this panting, fanatical book will be no help whatsoever. Podhoretz really seems to see the Middle East as a conflict between good and bad (and, believe it or not, in his parallel universe, the murderous followers of Ariel Sharon are "good"). What does one say except "Oy!"? Intelligent Israelis are aware of the sins that have been committed in their name; dimbulb Neo-Cons want to expand and continue their imperialism. Count Norm in their number. A disgusting book, but amazingly revealing.

The Coldest Winter by David Halberstam is not a perfect history of the Korean War. There were two historical facts missing which I think any credible historian would have to mention. One is the incident at the Bridge of Tokun Ri where hundreds of civilians were killed by American troops in what is euphenistically known as a "friendly fire" incident. The other is the disgraceful conduct of the all-Black 92nd Regiment which was disbanded as "unbreliable" after they broke ranks and ran to the rear after hearing their first gunshot. History is a moving target and the first casualty in war is the truth. Here's a tip. Go to any library and check out the books of history of the Vietnam War. If you find no reference to "fraggings", you know you aren't going to read the whole truth but one that has been ... Read More

I had this book recommended to me by several people and finally bought it and read it. It is not as good as its fans want you to believe; nor as bad as its detractors would make it out.

First, the book is adequately written, but is not going to make anybody's top 100 list. It should be kept in mind that much of the credit or blame for the prose should probably be placed on the co-author Robinson, not Luttrel. My own criticism was that the book often seemed heavily redundant and repetitive. In most of those places, it was the repetition of the all liberals are the stupid, short-sighted, and ignorant henchmen of America's enemies theme which gave rise to that feeling. Whether you agree or disagree with that sentiment is irrelevant. The sentiment is one which only needed to be said once ... Read More

Well having an interest history and how we held the soviets back I bought the book and audio cd of Legacy OF Ashes.
I though listened and read carefully and after taking in the entire book I am left with a bad taste.....the book really gives very little positive's to the fellows who really had little or no idea how to be spys etc. other than the fact that they were brave enough to give it go!

The book really attacks them all as being fools who couldn't shoot straight and so on and frankly that is not correct.

My suggestion would be to read some of the other books out there on the CIA and really see how hard it was to foil the soviets as they were brutal and vilolent and we as Americans really didnt know how to deal with what we know now and they new then as EVIL!!!!

My Grandfather's Son is more than a memoir. It is one of the finest autobiographies ever penned. Moreover, how ironic it is that a man we associate with dispassionate objective reasoning could produce one of the most emotionally moving books imaginable. I was deeply moved by his narrative throughout. I once knew a man like the author's grandfather, Myers, and he too cast a shadow far greater than his physical size. Thomas's tale is infinitely believable as he failed to fully appreciate the one he called "Daddy" until after he passed. The lessons granddad taught are ones which should be internalized by children today and I'd recommend reading aloud to them passages from the early chapters as a means for inspiration. Myers was a master of the art of self-sufficiency and gave Clarence the mental fortitude to persevere in the ... Read More

I once asked a professor what he thought about DeLillo's book Falling Man, and his response was that, "It just isn't what America needs right now."

At the time, I remember being exasperated by such a political response from a professor of liberal arts, but after reading this book, I can see what he meant. The Looming Tower is what America needs right now.

What struck me first when I opened it was how quickly I was able to read through it. Non-fiction books are often daunting, boring, heavy-handed, or badly written, but this book is proof that those don't have to be flaws of the genre.

Take a look in the back of the book at the number of books Wright went through in research, and how many people he interviewed, and you'll get a feel for why this book feels so real. Every character is portrayed ... Read More

This book was suggested to me by the mother of a Marine. I was going to say ex-Marine but there is no such thing. She said it was as close to the real thing as you could get. Her son was in Iraq three times but I don't think he told her the real thing. This book is good and it has it's moments. Enough so that I wouldn't want to trade places with any of these American hero's. I haven't finished the book yet but it tracks with my worst imaginings of what Iraq must be like. God bless our armed forces!
