RAJESH C. OZA, ANUPAMA R. OZA, and SIDDHARTHA R. OZA

"Growth takes place whenever a challenge evokes a successful response that, in turn, evokes a further and different challenge. We have not found any intrinsic reason why this process should not repeat itself indefinitely, even though a majority of civilizations have failed, as a matter of historical fact."--Arnold J. Toynbee, A Study of History

This piece--co-authored by a middle-aged father, his recently-graduated-from-college daughter, and his college-going son--is a collective engagement with Fareed Zakaria's The Post-American World. The father is anxious about how effectively Americans are utilizing the advantage of world-class universities; the daughter is seeking to address the inequity of unequal access to ... Read More

Interesting overview of how integrated the mob is in Italian society. We hear all the time about the Sicilians - this book is strictly about Italian crime syndicates. Soon to be released as a movie...

This book should be read before The Predator State is read. It is a less detailed, somewhat bias claim the understand the current situation in our economy but it lacks the meat that Galbraith covers in the Predator State.
I do believe that is is worth reading so that some understanding of what we are doing by borrowing so much at this time has caused. We seem to need a good recession to get back our ethics and begin real growth sometime soon. We are in very bad shape and now that the problem has become so large, we cannot just keep feeding the greedy. We need taxes and punishment for the white collar stupid managers that got us here. If only we had the ethics that were in place before the Yuppies and Yippies told us they wanted change but forgot what they were doing due to drugs, we might have been better off today. ... Friends and colleagues have been asking me repeatedly what is going on. This book helped me give reasonable answers, and I have recommended it to everyone who has asked. Mr. Morris speaks with the authority of an insider and conveys his knowledge in clear, direct language. Don't expect the juicy gossip and anecdotes that some other recent books on this topic have used to entice readers. This book is hard-nosed and business-like. And yet, still eminently readable.

I was trained as an economist and have sustained a reverence (religious tone intended) for free markets and deregulation for most of my professional career. As a professional economist, I have some quibbles with some of Mr. Morris's explanations. They feel oversimplified and supported more by conviction than by a subtle analysis of the facts at hand. ... : The Bin Ladens: An Arabian Family in the American Century
I started reading this book mainly because the author is a pulz prize winner. I started it back in April. Mind you I am a slow reader but this is one that I can't put down. I remember after 9/11 hearing that the Bin Laden family had been flown out the next day or so by Bush. But I didn't know anything about them. Except they were allowed to fly but I was stuck in Essen Germany (one of the pilots has lived there w/ his girlfriend). This book is drenched in so much information that Steve gathered. I cannot imagine how hard or frustrating it must have been to get people there to talk. I have been taking my time and absorbing it (and even highlighting names...like James Baker). I had no idea and I don't think most American's how intertwined the Bin Laden family is with the U.S. They own so many properties all over the country. Even in ... Read More

Unlike what many have been hoping for, "The Snowball" is not a book on what and how of value investing. You won't find detailed breakdowns of the Berkshire Hathaway deals, or the motivation behind them - the deals are discussed in passing, but the focus is always on Warren Buffet himself.

The book is a chronological look at the upbringing, the early years, and his consequent rise to the status of 'Oracle of Omaha'. Alice Schroeder provides an in depth look at Warren Buffets family and his immediate circle of friends throughout his life - without a doubt, the most complete biography of Warren Buffet.

If you're looking for Warren Buffets investment philosophy, take a look at "The Warren Buffet Way" by Robert Hagstrom, but if you want to learn about the man himself, then this is your book.

I was hoping to find a book that I could sink my teeth into and digest some good facts and ideas. I was disappointed wading through this cotton candy environment with little to sink my teeth into. The author provides some interesting ideas and insights but you really need to wade through a lot of biased, agenda driven narrative to find those few nuggets of information.

The author does little to provide a veneer of objectivity. His constant name dropping and references of who he talked to and where does little to provide a base of his authority.

The author seems to enjoy breathing the same rarified air of the elite and obviously wants to be part of their world and espouse their worldview. Due to this obsession and the nature of his job, he must maintain a good working relationship with this network of people and therefore there ... Read More

Someone wise once said: to those who understand no explanation is necessary; to those who do not, none is possible. Citing "human rights," Meyer and her minions agonize over such practices as waterboarding, sleep deprivation and such. This reveals that she knows nothing about torture as it has been practised our enemies over millenia. The irony of this is that the very people who denounce these interrogative techinques are the same ones who turn a blind eye to the inhuman, agonizingly painful destruction on helpless infants in the cause of "privacy" and "the right to choose." How can any sensible person take the likes of the irrational Bush haters such as Mayer seriously? The book reveals nothing that has not been in the news. Did Mayer complain about Clinton administration policy that Muslim attacks were to be treated as criminal matters and prosecuted accordingly? ... Read More
