Very well written and keeps your attention. Very detailed and fact based. The author is as unbiased as they come. I came into this book embarassingly ignorant about international politics, especially the events leading up to September 11, 2001. I feel thankful toward the author for putting together such complex information in a straight forward, but captivating way - a way that lets even the most unaware reader begin to understand the whirlwind of money, politics, fanaticism, and international counter-interests that intersect to create the horrors of tomorrow. Well having an interest history and how we held the soviets back I bought the book and audio cd of Legacy OF Ashes. I though listened and read carefully and after taking in the entire book I am left with a bad taste.....the book really gives very little positive's to the fellows who really had little or no idea how to be spys etc. other than the fact that they were brave enough to give it go! The book really attacks them all as being fools who couldn't shoot straight and so on and frankly that is not correct. My suggestion would be to read some of the other books out there on the CIA and really see how hard it was to foil the soviets as they were brutal and vilolent and we as Americans really didnt know how to deal with what we know now and they new then as EVIL!!!! To say that the Bush Administration and its chosen Iraq occupation overlords made poor choices during and immediately after the invasion of that country would be an understatement so vast that I have no words to describe how big an understatement I would be making. The novel captures with perfect pitch the shallowness of American culture in the last blissful days before September 11. It's strength rests on terrifically drawn characters, flushed out in so many subtle and nuanced ways. I think Bootie may be my new hero. The irony is that he far more integrity and principles than his uncle, though because he's young and naive he hasn't yet learned to channel his energies in an appropriate way. Marina typifies everything that is self-serving and sheltered about her generation, and Danielle struck me as the most likable character. A word about the prose. The first chapter had a few stylistic elements that struck me as bit purple, but the writing smooths out thereafter.
