I couldn't have prepped for the GMAT without this guide. It is a "must have" for anyone who actually wants to study for the GMAT with real GMAT questions. Kaplan's questions are too hard, Barron's are just bizarre - you can rely on these questions.

If you are totally confident in your abilities, then this book is probably extraneous if you already own the official guide. But if you are not, this book can be a handy supplement to provide some useful test-taking strategies (particularly for data sufficiency) and as a source of extra practice questions.

The CD-ROM and online content is useful in providing an additional source of practice tests and quizzes. The real benefit of these is that they are all timed. I found the practice tests here to be harder than the ones on the official GMAT website, and it appears that wrong answers here exact a greater penalty than the actual test. My practice tests using the CD-ROM ranged from 550-610 even just a few days before I took the test, but I ended up with over 700. This is incredibly ... Read More

After going through all the GMAT books, here is my honest opinion about some of the most popular GMAT books:

Official Guide:
Pros - Excellent source of GMAT questions. Very well organized with real test like questions.
Cons - No review of any math content or test-taking strategies. Not enough explanations of practice questions.
Overall, the Official Guide is a must have for all test-takers. It will give you a good idea about the type of questions to expect on the GMAT; however, if you need more than just a bank of questions, you need to look at some other source.

Kaplan:
Pros - Good for additional practice questions as a supplement
Cons - Review of math content is not thorough but just the very basics. Not enough explanation of test taking strategies. ... Read More

SC was definitely one of my weaknesses. I have completed 3 online diagnostic test SO FAR. In each test, almost 80% of SC answers were wrong.
Understanding the usage of have/ has/ had, difference between Like vs As and If vs Whether, usage of right idioms...this book has it all. I have seen drastic improvement in my mock test score so far.
I have all these books:
Kaplan
OG
Princeton
Nova Press
But none could give me a reasonable explanation on SC section.
The book is slightly expensive, but I think its worth it!

I've heard that kaplan under calculates your CAT scores by 100 but when I actually did it, I found the practice tests pretty ridiculous. Its not because the questions are harder, but the fact that the scoring algorithm intentionally underestimates your score significantly.
Ex: the official practice test gave me a 660, where as kaplan gave me a 560.

Also the CAT math sections are full of errors. The verbal sections have a real problem it comes to double spacing. Its really annoying when you have spend time to distinguish between when the passage ends and when the actual question begins. I also found a reading passage where the final paragraph was full of wingdings and incomplete sentences. Some Critical reasoning questions are really unsolvable. I remember one question that assumed a higher draft ... Read More

I used Princeton Reviews SAT book and was well pleased. I pushed my score to the 1300 mark. I'm now eyeing graduate school and am hoping for the same results with this book. I just finished my first run through of this book. Overall I was pretty pleased. The thought process undergone to construct the book is in a methodical manner that is conducive to learning. Much better than Kaplans. My main complaint is the lack of content in the gramar certain areas of the math section. Some of the teaching logic is fundamentaly flawed. If you don't need to re-visit some of your weak areas and are to use this as a strategic guide then I would say it would be well worth your money. But some of the areas that I honestly have not had to think about since maybe grade school seemed lacking in all areas. Hope this helped.

This book contains a wealth of information and can be overwhelming if trying to read from start to finish. However, it has some incredible insight and is best used in conjunction with other materials in order to develop your strategy. That being said, if you can only purchase one resource, this is the one.

This book provides a good introduction to the GMAT process, the types of questions and some general test-taking strategies. The book often refers to a 'Joe Bloggs' type, and it appears that this person would do no better than a 550-600 score. This book is good to get some basics underway, but it will not be enough if you are aiming for higher scores.
I bought this book, Kaplan, as well as the official guide. This book is definitely the easiest of the three and provides a very basic approach. This suited me as I had not touched this type of maths since high school, so this was the one I started with. However, you will find that as you gain comfort and ocnfidence with the subject matter that this will cease to be nearly so helpful. The section on data sufficiency was the one I found most helpful out of all the books as it ... Read More

I didn't want some text that would be a waste of time. Instead, I wanted something that would prepare me for the format of the exam while, at the same time, helping me with any finer points on the specific stragety for the exam.

The text was a great choice because it only shows the most difficult problems, and then explains how they arrived at the "correct" answer. Naturally, I found some to be easy and others quite challenging. In the end, it made the GMAT very easy to take, and appears to have gotten me a good score (just took it this AM).

I would recommend to anyone who considers themself a smart person.
