I & my husband both, enjoyed this book -- about how it feels to get old, while giving the inside story of how circus life was in the early 1900's.Great characters, book made me feel like I was there....

This is a tale about a remarkable man - unfortunately it is not very well written. Even tho the action takes place in different towns, it is basically the same story over and over. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in building schools for the poor in Pakistan and also as an aid to sleeplessness.

I had no intention of reading this book because of the negative publicity surrounding Khaled Hosseini's previously published novel, The Kite Runner, and the movie based on it. I know some people who will not watch any movie with rape scenes. Unfortunately, I'm not that ideologically consistent, as my favorite director is Sergio Leone, and his films have a lot of rape scenes. In any event, a local Muslima was leading a book discussion group which was planning to talk about A Thousand Splendid Suns, so I decided to read it and participate. I am disappointed once again with a hyped-up book. I thought it would be a beautiful story about a mute boy and his beloved dogs, but it wasn't! The first part was all I'd hoped I'd be reading until the whole thing turned south. Instead of being a beautiful story, it rather quickly turned dark and ugly, and became a haunting tragedy. I don't like misery and disheartening sadness, and want to know ahead of time if that's what a book is. This one was represented to be something wonderful, and it was anything but that, apart from the wonderful way he gave the dogs personality. If he'd stayed with that, he would have written a spectacular novel. When people say they hated for it to end, what on earth were they enjoying? I had this book recommended to me by several people and finally bought it and read it. It is not as good as its fans want you to believe; nor as bad as its detractors would make it out. First, the book is adequately written, but is not going to make anybody's top 100 list. It should be kept in mind that much of the credit or blame for the prose should probably be placed on the co-author Robinson, not Luttrel. My own criticism was that the book often seemed heavily redundant and repetitive. In most of those places, it was the repetition of the all liberals are the stupid, short-sighted, and ignorant henchmen of America's enemies theme which gave rise to that feeling. This book was exactly what I was looking for, and lives up to everything you read in other reviews. I did not read it when it was originally released (as a 6 year old at the time it was a little above my reading level). Instead, I chose it recently because I wanted to read a book about Afghanistan that was published without the knowledge of how events in this country would unfold. The author does a wonderful job of pulling you into the lives of the central family while vividly portraying national events. I highly recommend this book.

After reading and loving Night by Elie Wiesel, I thought I'd try another of Oprah's book club picks. I had high expectations and was thoroughly satisfied with this book. It is a story that seems to go on endlessly as if you are reading a true history! Lots of accurate facts and descriptions to make you feels as if you are really there. At the end I was left with a feeling of sadness knowing it was all coming to a close. The sign of a great read!

I absolutely loved this book. The way the book ended was unexpected, because of the way the story drew you in. Until you read the book that might not make sence. But I highly recomend you read it to see for yourselves. The book really draws out your emotions, I felt joy to the point of laughing out loud and sadness to the point of tears. The tragedy was a hard one to swallow. Because of the emotions something like this invokes you really get the idea as to how God our Father really loves us.
