To Kill a Mockingbird (Collector's Edition)
Lone fathers and their kids have been a hit in many movies. I have severl examples, like, Ryan and Tatum O'Neil in Paper Moon, Jon Voight and Ricky Schroeder in the re-make of 'The Champ' and Dustin Hoffman and Justin Henry in Kramer vs Kramer. Gregory Peck, won an Academy Award, for playing a sole parent, and he's never been better. The script for this movie was based upon Harper Lee's sensitive and intelligent novel set in racially-torn Alabama. Gregory Peck, plays Atticus Finch, a wise lawyer bravely raising his two kids Jem(Phillip Alford) and Scout(Mary Badham) in the hot-headed Southern town. The crux of the plot is Finch's defence of a colored man accused of rape. The film was put together by two excellent film-makers, producer Alan J. ... Read More

First off, I don't understand why there's so much hate around this novel. I'd say it's one of the best pieces of American literature I have ever read. The reader's brief journey through Holden's transition from the innocent over to the "perverted" adult world. From Holden's encounter with the water-spitting perverts to Holden's date with Sally in New York, the Catcher in the Rye is a great example of what the teenage years are like. This excellent novel is one that I truly related to, being a teenager experiencing some of the same feelings that Holden feels. While I don't know what it feels like to lose a loved one like Holden does, I understand how he feels about sexuality and that struggle to maintain what is innocent in the world, and I even could experience some of what it would feel like to ... ... mainly because it is such a good story and so well written. Come to think of it, not much of this book is really about the rape and crime. It is about childhood, growing up and growing prejudice. It is about not only racism but also feminism. Scout, the main character, has such a lovely personality and I really started to like her. It was almost like I knew her and parts of me fell in love with Jem, her brother. I found parts of the slang a bit hard to read and it took a good 100 pages before the story had me that intrigued that I couldn't put it down. Sometimes you read a book and you really do realize why some books last with us and literature forever and why some don't. This book deals with human joy and suffering, ideals and rebels, crime and punishment and of course of race and sad part of the ... Read More

"To Kill a Mockingbird" is the bestselling book of the twentieth century and is considered to be one of the best books of all time. Almost an instant classic upon its publication, it has enjoyed almost fifty years in the limelight, and never fallen by the wayside. Yet its author remains something of an enigma, a writer turned recluse who never wrote a second novel. That is exactly what Charles J. Shileds sets out to explore in "Mockingbird: A Portrait of Harper Lee".

This biography begins with an acknowledgement from the author that Nelle Harper Lee would not grant any interviews to help him with the book, as she has not done so since the late 1960s. Shields explores her early life and family backgrond, painting a picture of a workaholic father and mentally imbalanced mother, and describing ... Read More

This book is essentially a detailed and well-crafted piece of journalism with the level and quality of detail to bring it into horrific focus. One gets access to all sides of the murders of a family from the effect on the close relatives and friends to the emotional states of the murderers themselves and their final demise at the end of a rope. No one can escape this book without a large emotional wallop that will leave one's mind reverberating for some time. The book additionally invites questions concerning the limits and boundaries of journalistic integrity. When does the journalist step beyond his role as observer and become part of the story? And...Should the journalist do so and thus change outcomes? Disturbingly provocative in many ways.

OK, everyone under the sun has reviewed To Kill A Mockingbird; why do I feel like reviewing it?

I just re-read this after reading it once when I was in middle school, many moons ago (I'm in my 40s). I could not put this book down. What a superb and satisfying novel. It's amazing how compelling and universal a tale that Lee spun with just a pretty simple, basic, and down-to-earth set of small town characters. As noted, I read this when I was in middle school and I remember enjoying it more than almost any other assigned book I had read. I'm amazed at how great it is, from the perspective of a mature adult with diverse life experiences, much travel, and my own children. This edition is a nicely turned-out hardback that I borrowed from my Mom. A nice edition to hold and read. No typos; just a very few, ... Read More

Imagine, your on an island with only your peers, no adult supervision, no rules, many would call it a paradise, but when you emotions are pushed to the extreme, will you be able to survive. Golding asks this very same question in his novel "Lord of the Flies."
Set during WWII, a group of schoolboys are on their way home from school when their plane is shot down. The boys soon learn that they are stranded on an island with no adults. Many consider it a vacation, a break from their lives once ruled by strict headmasters and parents. The boys are able to start their own tribe with only a few rules. The tribe is ruled by one chief chosen by the boys.
As the novel progresses many of the boys are stricken by talk of the "beastie." Their tribe starts to divide between the boys who want to hunt and have ... Read More

I, TOO, am a literary snob. But I have to say, I had to go back again and read this much-loved book of my younger years -- well, only 5 years ago. But I relayed this heart-felt literary love of mine to my other great hardcover friends, Tawney and Marie (one, a long-time member of the illustrious Corduroy Club/Manhattan chapter), and they immediately nodded and tilted their heads at my cerebral connection to this masterpiece. I hope that we all, including myself (after countless other reads, good and bad, achievements and not so much of sad, downwardly-glanced works, but I digress) revisit this delightful glance at a telling of history that few these days pause to the written word. I commend my fellow apprecianados. Life - let it be lived.

 : To Kill a Mockingbird
Harper Lee was encouraged to write some of her childhood memories. What in the beginning seems like the story of three childhood friends in depression era Macomb, Alabama, turns out to be packed with insights to the makeup of human kind.

This story is intriguing on many levels from the history of the area to the stereotyping of people. Most of all every turn was a surprise as told in the first person from the view of Scout Finch. And instead of telling the story in a six year old vocabulary she uses an exceptionally large repertoire to describe the people and events. This story is not as slow passed as one may guess from first glance as every remark and every action will be needed for a future action.

A major controversial part of the story is the trial of Tom Robinson. Hoverer this is just a catalyst to help ... Read More
