One thing I really, truly like about Watchmen, that sets it apart from other works of superhero fiction, is the way it treats its heroes. They, on the most part, are fully aware of how silly dressing up in a theatrical costume and running around fighting crime is, and the more sane amongst them treat the enterprise as very tongue-in-cheek. With the exception of one hero they have no powers, and thus distinguishing between one hero or heroine and the next becomes highly character-driven rather than "oh he's the guy with the claws" or "oh he has the eye lasers".

Speaking of characters, the characters here are extremely well-written. Two examples:
- Rorschach is a vigilante detective with a sordid past and a rapidly deteriorating psyche. By the opening of the story he considers ... Read More

The Dark Knight Returns is a classic piece of comic book literature that helped transition Batman from the campy character he had been turned into back to the grim and gritty protector of the streets that he was meant to be. The story depicts a Gotham City that has been without Batman for years, since Bruce Wayne has gotten old and finally put away the cape and cowl. However, a series of crime waves in the city drives Batman to return despite his age, taking on a world that has become more violent and deranged than anything he faced in his younger days.

The Dark Knight Returns deserves some major recognition for the way it renewed the character of Batman. Years later, many writers are still basing their Batman stories on the themes that Frank Miller re-introduced. Unfortunately, the ... Read More

This is a great book indeed. It really shows a side to comics that alot of people dont see everyday in their local stores and tv shows.Only thing I found dissapointing was the fact that the book was not long enough.Im the kind of person where when I start to get lost into the story,I cant get enough and need more.Im sure alot of people would agree with me when I say that.Overall a definite must have.

Amazing artistic point of view of the battle.
The reality there is greatly represent in perfect lines and emotional quotes.
So much impressive skills makes Frank Miller the best in everything he does (with this book and the movies).
Worth EVERY CENT!

Just, wow.

The story and artwork might seem a little dated at first, but then this IS a prequel and I have no idea whether the effect was intentional but it panned out phenomenally!

Mazzucchelli's artwork adds a new dimension to Miller's already amazing skill as a storyteller who is especially adept at weaving his magic with the Dark Knight.

This was definitely worth a buy, and I'd recommend it to fans of the Dark Knight, fans of the movies and even casual browsers looking to figure out the substance behind the hype of the phenomenon that has become Batman.

I'll be honest. I saw the movie before I read the book. But the movie doesn't hold a candle to the book. I did like Wilhelmina Harker's portrayal in the movie, but in all cases, the book was far superior to the movie. I really enjoyed the art and storylines, and am sad there are only two books to this series, aside the Black Dossier.

I saw this a few years ago, and it is really thought provoking, which is rare in movies nowdays. It makes you wonder how easy it could be to create a dictatorship in which the few own the powerful, especially since nowdays the media will participate because they care more about ratings than reporting. my only complaint was the length, although that is due to my short attention span

The commic book part is great, however; the end story is really wordy and kind of boring. It does have some clever points but not enough to keep you interested. I was impressed to see that Speilburg (sp? I'm a bad speller) copied the tripods from this story and used them in "War of the Worlds" remake.

From Hell is a literary tour de force, one of many from legendary comics scribe Alan Moore. From Hell tells the (deeply researched) story of Jack the Ripper, but it is so much more than that. Quite simply, it is a story of London--the city is the book's primary focus and it soon becomes a living, breathing character in the mind of the reader. The amount of thought, effort, and research put into this massive volume is quite astounding and a testament to Moore and artist Eddie Campbell's profound skill at their craft. From Hell, along with Watchmen, is Moore's greatest work and should be read by all. It is a wonder to behold, I'd even go so far as to call it life-changing.

Not long after Batman's arrival in Gotham City, he, Captain Jim Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent are making slow progress in cracking the criminal empire of Carmine 'the Roman' Falcone, whose reach extendeds into seemingly every nook of the city from the alleys to the courtrooms and boardrooms. Into this a new player mysteriously enters on Halloween night, an unseen killer who comes to strike on nearly every major holiday, taking out someone else close to the Roman or his empire. The mystery of the identity of this 'Holiday killer', and the events triggered by the killings, are the main focus of The Long Halloween, while subplots involving many of Gotham's most famous denizens are woven in seamlessly.

The Long Halloween, taking a full year of comics time to unfold, occurs in and around other events that took place early in the ... Read More
